Product Description

'Kerr is the Bill Bryson of the Playstation generation’

Billy Kerr had only gone out for a bacon roll but
in his hungover state had vowed to
find Buddha a more fitting home.
The only problem was that the Buddhas new home
happened to be in Bangkok.
And so begins a journey that will transport Billy
and his partner Ellen around the world and
back again. Trouble is never far away from this
hapless duo. They stumble across a Scottish
themed brothel, buy hippo penis cream instead
of malaria pills and highjack a stage to sing
the Scottish Anthem.
But all the fun of travel soon evaporates.
An incident occurs that turns the couples’s
happy go lucky experience in to a nightmare
and brings them close to death and even
closer to madness.
Startlingly honest, ridiculously funny and horrifyingly frightening, A Tale of Buddhas and Bandits is the true
story of two years in the life of an itinerant couple.

In this rather mammoth diary, Billy Kerr recalls his travels around the world with his partner, Ellen. After waking up with terrible hangovers in their flat in Edinburgh, the couple decide enough is enough - something has to change. Billy has a revelation - he must take his miniature Buddha ornament back to its rightful home in Bangkok - so off they go.

Very funny, sad, and extremely frightening at one point - this book had me gripped from start to finish. Kerr's humour is very Scottish though - so keep that in mind when reading. A fantastic book, I hope he releases his tales of his travels in Australia very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale Of Buddhas and Bandits 5 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was not expecting much from a 49p book but this was a real gem.I loved the authors honest, good humored writing style, it made me feel as though was travelling with them. I have looked for other books by Billy Kerr to read but I think this is his first. I hope he gets the inspiration to write another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining 27 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book, I felt as though I knew Billy and El even before the 3rd chapter. It was really entertaining following their journey around the world.

I can recommend this book for anyone looking for a lighthearted story, with heart!

2.0 out of 5 stars Quit while you're ahead 16 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book starts well. Kerr's writing is light weight and easy going, if a little grammatically lacking at times. The story of a stumbled upon quest and a determination to see it through is pleasant enough (although I struggled to find the "very Scottish humor" that other reviewers saw). Where this story really fails is that it doesn't end when the goal is achieved. Instead Mr. Kerr takes on a rather rambling and incoherent tale of his subsequent travels ending in a clearly traumatic event which brings down the whole tone of an otherwise enjoyable story. If writing of his South American misadventure bought Mr. Kerr some sense of release or closure I can sympathize but writing about it is one thing, subjecting the rest of us to it is a different matter.

My advice, dear reader, is end on a high and stop reading once he gets to Bangkok - the rest will only disappoint.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't continue 7 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I read the first 20 pages and couldn't read anymore, it just made me cringe the whole time. If you're going to write a travel diary write a travel diary, don't make up some lame premise and bore us with it first

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring 30 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very badly written with numerous typo errors, not knowing the difference between their and there being the most obvious several times. Boring in places.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful 27 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dreadfully written and absolutely tedious in parts. So tedious in fact that I had to quit this nonsense half way through as it was torturous to read. The author comes across as being very immature, judgmental and a complete bore. I actually can't believe this has been published, and some of the jokes he makes are just so cringe worthy. Avoid.
