Just fabulous! 2 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
'Path of Miracles' by Joby Talbot has some heart-burstingly beautiful passages and is generally full of interest musically and in other ways. It is created around highlights of the pilgrim's physical and spiritual journey to Santiago de Compostela and stories surrounding St. James. The infectious rhythms, extraordinary timbres, gorgeous harmonies and melodies and the in part 'fantastic', in part lovely text from Robert Dickinson blend into something truly inspired and inspiring.
Directed by Nigel Short, Tenebrae, with their magnificent collection of voices and masterful technique, manage to do full justice to a demanding, unaccompanied, vocal score. A really wonderful CD.

I heard a snippet of Tenebrae on the radio, and then looked up and found their CD on Amazon. I was a little disapointed because it was a bit more out-of-the-ordinary than I had expected - somewhat difficult to follow in places - and not a conventional selection of music. Having said that, if you like this kind of thing, this is a very well produced CD, just not my kind of choir music. I suppose I was expecting something a bit like the King Singers, I should have reviewed the music on the page before I bought it.

Mystical, soothing, modern, and ancient 8 Nov 2006
By S. M. McCroskey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first heard part of this album on New Sounds on NPR. I didn't catch the name of the composer, so I actually had to wait until the next day when the show's playlist was posted online to find out. I rarely remember to do something like that for an hour, let alone a full day later.

Fortunately, the album was worth the effort. I was fascinated by the modern composition and performance celebrating a journey that is undertaken today just as it was hundreds of years ago.

Path of Miracles is not for everyone, but fans of new age and chant should give it a listen.

The future of choral music 19 Nov 2011
By Mike - Published on Amazon.com
This CD is life changing, Tenebrae does a fantastic job of blending the traditional British choir boy sound and the new age semi-atonal mature voice colors brilliantly. The singers of the group are in fact very versatile, ranging from opera singers to English church choir products. This choir is a prime example of what makes a good choral sound, a strong full bass presence and getting lighter and lighter on the way up to the sopranos. The choir's diction is impeccable and their precision is spot on. At times this group sounds like a chorale of 60 voices (even though they are under 20 singers), showing that size of ensemble is irrelevant if you have the right singers. I recommend this choir to anybody as a model for which to build a choir.
