Not one of his best 27 July 2002
By johnverp TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Given the rather shallow plot, this is an unnecessarily long book of over 600 pages. It is, however, and as usual, full of pace.

It took 200 to 300 pages before things started to happen and even then much was a little too unbelievable. To be fair, though, Demille does write of a period during the Cold War when many elements of his plot would have been pretty accurate. The book also stopped a little too suddenly for my liking.

In short, I rate Demille highly but this is not one of his better efforts. The plot was thin and he dragged it out for far too long.

I bought this on the back of Up Country and Lion's Game, and since have read Plum Island, all of which I enjoyed in varying degrees, but something went wrong with this one. Stock characters, stilted dialogue, and a plot that started out as improbable and went rapidly downhill could have something to do with it. Characters are moved around - and sacrificed - like chess pieces, coincidences abound, and the body count goes off the meter. If you like credible well-plotted thrillers then this is not for you.

The book is about a group of old time war soldiers who are looking for about 40 years for a spy that turned over during the second world war to the russians. The people on the OSS the group of soldiers from the 2nd world war are mostly high placed people and have serious power to search for the spy.

The story was very good and kept enough suprises and turnes in plot to keep you guessing till the end. It's great storyline and serious tension that is builtup very well to keep you interested till the end.
