Ok, these are ceramic beads for keeping pastry down during blind-baking. They work good and one tub is just about enough for a 22cm (9") round tin. If you have any bigger tins or are do more than 1 at once...buy 2 (or more). Used them 10x so far...no problems. When the pie is done blind baking, I simply lift the beads out in the waxed oven paper into a heat proof dish (ususally a pot on the stove in my case) to cool. Once cooled (a few hours later) simply use the paper to funnel all the beads back into the tub and re-shelf for the next time. Simple.

It took me a while to invest in proper pie weights as I was slightly sceptical that they work any better than dried beans but I'm glad I did. These pie weights do exactly what they are designed for - stop the pie crust and base from shrinking or puffing. I have found that these offer adequate cover for a 9" tin as others have stated. They do tend to stay very warm for a while after being removed from the oven so I leave them to cool for about 30 minutes before putting back in the plastic pot.

If you do a lot of pastry baking I would definitely recommend investing in these pie weights.

I use baking beans whenever I blind bake pastry cases as I find my pastry turns out much better as a result. You basically just need to roll out the pastry and place in the dish as normal, add a piece of greaseproof paper and then pour in the beans so that they cover the base. The greaseproof paper stops the beans from becoming embedded in the pastry and also allows easy removal of the beans for cooling subsequently. I normally cook the assembled mass for about 10 minutes before I remove the beans on the paper and then return the pastry to the oven for another few minutes until the base has cooked through.

The beans need to cool down for quite a time before they can be put away for next use but that is probably the only thing you need to do between uses. The greaseproof paper keeps them clean whilst baking takes place and the tub provides an easy storage option.

I have been using baking beans for years and my original tub is still going strong even after surviving my first attempt to use them without a paper layer between them and the pastry. They seem to be indestructible if used properly and capable of taking a lot of abuse. I only purchased this second set because I wanted to blind bake more than one pastry case at a time; this set is proving to be as reliable as my original.

This tub contains sufficient beans to bake one large pastry case at a time; you may wish to consider buying two tubs if you do a lot of baking in batches.

I enjoy baking, but always used uncooked rice for blind baking pastry. The down side of that is you have to throw the rice away at some point. However these beans are ceramic so hold down the grease proof paper and pastry very well. They are a bit heavy (not so that you cant lift it) so be careful around children as i dropped mine and it hurt my feet and chipped my tile floor a bit. No fault of the product. They are re usable but do get very hot so allow them to cool before you put them back in the container. I would buy some more if i needed to.

These ceramic baking beans are perfect for the use they were intended for. I made lemon flavoured pastry for home made lemon meringue pies and these baking beans made the pastry come out perfectly even and there was no bubbling or anything. Don't forget to prick the pastry with a fork before covering it with the baking parchment and filling it with these beans!

i bought these and over all im pretty happy although there is one thing. when i was blind baking in some small tartlet loose bottom tins (also available on amazon) i found because of the light weight combined with the small surface area that the base of the tart wasnt up to scratch. this is becase you cant load alot of them in such a small area they came across a little light. but for bigger things such as quiche they worked quite well.

The item arrived in a broken box, however I had other container for the baking beans at home. I have tried the product and it is brilliant, so I can get on with blind baking pastry.

Good value, effective at doing what they are meant to, decent packaging for storage - everything you could ask. 700g seems like a better amount than 500g (which is what a lot of the alternative brands offer) as it does generously cover the base of a good-sized (8-9") flan case or cake tin completely. Can highly recommend.
