An excellent book, initially recommended to me by several of my evolutionary biology lecturers as part of my undergraduate degree in biology. "Taking Wing" combines an informal style with an excellent command of the facts about the subject domain.

The book begins with historical reviews of the discovery of archaeopteryx fossils, before progressing to exploring and fleshing out the details about this creature, discovering its unique value to researchers as a 'missing link' in the evolutionary chain between dinosaurs and birds. Its pace is always well judged, never presenting too much information so as to become incomprehensible, but also managing to steer clear of reader boredom resulting from a dearth of stimulating facts.

Recommended to anyone, from those undertaking research or study on the subject to those with a casual interest after a good 'popular science' read
