I cannot recommend this album enough ! A great opportunity to listen once again to the witty insights of Neil Innes from his long gone TV programme the Innes Book of records. The lyrics of the songs are still very much relevant to the wims and fetishes of modern life. There is also a glint of moving sentimentality at times. Neil Innes like his late lamented colleague from the Bonzo's Viv Stanshall is a national treasure. Buy the album, not only is it melodic covering a number of styles from rock, techno through to reggae, but it makes you laugh, think and cry ! Brilliant !!
As John Lennon is seen (wrongly) as the better songwriter/creative genius to Paul McCarney in and beyond the Beatles so Viv Stanshall also cast a shadow over Neil Innes' post Bonzo Dog career.
This two album package gives a good round-up of some of his best solo work. My reason for deducting a star from what ought to be a 5 star package is that this does not neccessarily chat Neil Innes at his best.
I always thought that most of these songs worked better with the visuals of the TV series, The Innes Book of Records and that something was missing on their own. I also had a chance to see Neil Innes a few times at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the early 80s and as a live solo performer he was just fantastic. The studio renditions, therefore, seem like, again something is missing but I think I have been a little spoilt in that respect.
This is a great collection of songs and despite my minor reservation I still realy enjoy the sheer joy of listening to them.
Whilst the album had subtle undertones of the early WWhoo, i detected a more gwitty Beatles extwavaganza. Especially during the high C withw a cwedit card stuck up is arse. Fanks and gwoood night. Peace and love fwall.
