Product Description

High in the Spanish mountains, life at Casa Desolada is nothing if not fraught. Embattled and bemused, Nick Snelling, ex-soldier, antiques dealer, builder, legal executive, consultant, author, estate agent and equity trader has finally become an ex patriot. A doomed romantic, Nick lurches from the shortest TV career in media history to a disastrous attempt at becoming a wine merchant of fine Riojas. Along the way, he battles sex obsessed English language students, lethal barbecues, the temptation of topless beach beauties, the mysteries of Iberian building and the ultimate peril of a wife ruinously seduced by Spanish shopping. Meanwhile, Nick’s attempts to impose Spanish patriarchal machismo upon his family repeatedly back-fire… Nick Snelling is a writer and professional journalist who lives with his wife and two children in the Valencian mountains of Spain. Learn more at www.nicholassnelling.com Margaret Denmark is a professional artist who lives in Spain with her partner who is also a painter. For many years she was an illustrator and her work appeared for the Radio Times amongst others.

From the Back Cover

"A side-splitting account of life in Spain.

"Casa Desolada is rather a jolly place despite the author's attempts to convince us otherwise in this Brysonesque take on the lot of the beleaguered expat.

"An hilarious introduction to life in Spain and the disastrous goings-on in Casa Desolada. Recounted by Nick Snelling and wittily illustrated by Margaret Denmark this book is "Just William" in long trousers! Do read it."
- Herbert Wise Director of `I Claudius', `Rumpole of The Bailey', `Inspector Morse', `A Touch of Frost' and others...

1.0 out of 5 stars A boring slog of a blog..., 25 Oct 2010

This review is from: Taking The Heat: An Expat Under Pressure In Spain (Paperback)
I used to live in Spain and out of curiosity I tried to read this book... but it proved to be an impossible task. 'Taking the Heat: An Expat Under Pressure in Spain' was certainly not an amusing or well-written account but just another Brit stating the obvious about Spain in a poor imitation of a style of writing that was popular decades ago. In fact, the book was a huge disappointment, tired, dull and full of clichés which read like a not-very-interesting blog. As another reviewer pointed out, this territory has been well-covered by Chris Stewart who really does know how to write a good book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another money making expat..........., 4 April 2011
This review is from: Taking The Heat: An Expat Under Pressure In Spain (Paperback)
Another must read book...........what a complete waste of time. Having lived in Spain myself I was frustrated and bemused by this book. 160 pages, which if written in a normal font rather than kids script, would condense into a normal adult 45-50 page book. An over priced waste of money. There are a lot better, funnier and more informative books than this to spend your money on that will give you a better idea of life in Spain.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a load of . . . . . .!, 9 Feb 2011
This review is from: Taking The Heat: An Expat Under Pressure In Spain (Paperback)
Don't waste your money. This is a very thin book with quite large text.
It's not even that funny and it's well overpriced!!
