I used this course to improve upon my french having used the same author's "French in 3 Months". With either of these courses don't even think about not buying the cassettes that go with them

The course is divided into ten lessons which cover most aspects of french life and assuming you've done a basic course, will enable you to deal with most situations that you could meet. Some of the material is a little dated, for example the French craze for collecting pins/badges dates over 5 years now, Disneyland Paris is older now than it once was, and the European Union issues are also in the past. However having said that these things are still around in some form, and the book enables people to talk about them and related matters. The "pins" chapter deals with the subject of hobbies and interests well and the material is well used. The same chapter also covers the rather sensitive topic of "Franglais" which it is important to know something about ( and avoid using if you can!)Some of the topics covered are not going to change much, e.g politics and the world of work. As a book pitched at people who are serious about french and probably want to live in France the book does very well indeed. The way that the authors have picked up on the issues that we all as English learners have trouble with, for example pronunciation (get those tapes ) and the subjunctive, prepositions etc , is very good. Colloquial French and common proverbs and sayings are also included to help us kid those French people we meet that we've been there for a long time when its only our second day in the country.Obviouly their experience as teachers has come through here

Having worked through the same Publishing House's "Advanced German " perhaps the one thing that is missing is a bit of humour. One or two more light hearted passages might have been worth putting in. But what is there is perfectly readable and useful. The book is also clearly laid out and easy to use

After sitting at traffic lights for two years at various times practising my pronunciation on the way to work i am regularly complimented by French people on how well i speak it, so these guys must be doing something right, but having got through this you must find people to practice with or it will go. Anyone who gets through this course will find that they have reached a serious level of French speaking and understanding
