Product Description

This is a step-by-step foundation gundog training course, designed to teach a puppy right from the start, with kindness and rewards, what is required of him for life.

About the Author

Anthea Lawrence (KCAI) trained as a youth leader, professional child care worker and as a social worker specialising in social group work, family therapy and child care. In her other life, she has had an interest in Golden Retrievers for over 50 yrs. and has owned, bred, competed with and worked Goldens for over 20 years. She has been involved as a gun dog training instructor since 1989 and now runs classes at all levels, for any variety of gundog in Worcestershire. She and her dogs work on shoots during the winter months picking up, as well as providing others with on-shoot training to learn about the dog work required on shoots. In November 2005 she gained accreditation by the Kennel Club as a gun dog training instructor and she is one of the first instructors in the country, to gain this new qualification. Her first book was published in 2005 by Trafford, available from www.trafford.com and it is entitled Respect and Leadership in Dog Training & Related Articles.

Brilliant book. Easy to read and easy to follow her thinking. Much more input on the handler 'thinking' before 'doing' than any other gundog training book I have read. Much more input on'why' and also 'why not'. Help when things go wrong - something else that is missing on other gundog training books. I use her methods myself so I know they work, not just for my dogs but for others too. No 'dog breaking' here. Wish I had read something like this when I started in dogs years ago. I would recommend this to anyone wanting sound information and advice on training a gundog. Also read 'Respect and Leadership'by the same author.

I got this book to get me started with GDT for my year old Springer Spaniel. There's a lot of good dog psychology in there, very useful in understanding why they do what they do, but for me there's just not enough help on how to remedy existing problems. Would definitely use this when starting with a puppy I was just intending to work, but for me, with a pet dog who could just benefit with some extra training and stimulus to keep him happy and occupied, it's not that helpful. There are some nice tips in there, however, and the methods of positive and negative reinforcement are kind - no ear-pinching etc. Will be passing it on to a friend with a working 8-week old lab and I'm sure she'll find it very useful.
