Amazon Review

Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a comprehensive book that explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control. Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realised that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a top-notch resource section. This is recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Before reading this book I considered myself well informed on fertility. I had been charting my temperature for a year without trying for a baby as I had irregular cycles. After 5 months of trying ( and lots of ovulation kits)I bought this book and realised I was not charting accurately enough and missing out the other signs of fertility. On looking back at previous charts, with the help of the book it was clear that I was ovulating most cycles but was missing my most fertile days. Needless to say 2 months later I conceived and our first baby is due at Christmas. Be prepared to learn loads from this book and to be initially slightly embarassed by some of the contents. Don't be put off by the amount of information, you can dip in and out of sections relevant to you. I passed the book onto a friend at work who is trying for a a baby and everyone had a peep. Despite some "eughs" (cervical fluid) everyone learned something. If you are trying to conceive this is an invaluable tool and may save an unnecessary referral to a fertility clinic.

I was desperate to have a baby & tried for a long time & tried many different things. I was booked in for tests & a friend mentioned this book she had noticed on the internet. So obviously I thought I'd give it a go. Within 3mths I was pregnant & I swear it is with following the instructions laid out in the book. It is quite complicated at first but you get used to it. The book was well set out and explained everything easily. I would recommend it to anyone trying for a baby who is having trouble. I now have a beautiful 5mth old baby daughter & I thank God every day for bringing her into our lives.
I wish you all the luck in world if you're trying for a baby!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book and feel that it will be a life changer for me. I read Chapters 1-12 intensely, making sure I understood the basic principles and details. It wasn't hard to do as the writing was very simple and easy to follow. I never felt overwhelmed with medical terminology and I was so interested in this subject that I couldn't put it down. I couldn't believe how little I knew about women's bodies and systems!

I then read the following chapters that applied to me or I took an interest in, but I would recommend avoiding skipping over anything in Chapters 1-12 as it will help you understand everything else in the book.

I have been married for almost a year now and when I first got married I had discussed with my husband the possibilities of using invasive, expensive and long term birth control options (the IUD or the implant). The only thing I was considering was the convience of these options compared with the pill which I was on for about 10 years. He actually convinced me not to undergo any of these procedures because: a. we didn't know the negative side effects they could have on my body, b. how they would affect our ability to conceive when we were ready, and c. the costs. We decided to use condoms and I am actually very grateful that I didn't go to those extremes for birth control.

I don't know if I would have been interested in this book or method earlier in my life, due to immaturity and not being in a long term committed relationship (the birth control method suggested in the book is not suited for adolescents or people not in an std concious, monogamous relationship) .

At this stage in my life it was exactly what I was looking for.

I bought this book the 2nd month of TTC. I am now 9 months along and no pregnancy yet (apart from one chemical). At first I was impressed with the book as it explains clearly the fertility awareness method and this is useful info -and great to get you started. However, it is only now, looking back at what this book told me that I am horrified that I got sucked into this way of thinking. The author on numerous occasions through the book states that if you have no luck within the first 4-6 months there is most likely an issue which needs medical investigation. This is not always true.

After 6 months I was in pieces thinking I was infertile! After various tests on both my husband's semen and my own hormone levels it came to light that everything was as it should be. Sometimes it just takes time- and this is not stated clearly enough in the book. After finally 'forgiving' myself for not being a textbook model of fertility I fell pregnant although sadly not to be that time. I now have every faith that I will have a baby which is something I did not feel after reading the book over and over again wondering what was wrong with me.

Please don't take every word in this book as gospel. We don't have that much control over our complex bodies and minds, despite wanting to believe we do. All that unnecessary stress has done me no favours and I can imagine has only been counterproductive.

My husband and I picked out TCOYF at our local bookstore and have read it from cover to cover. We have learned so much about my body, and our relationship is closer because we can share in charting my cycles. I was skeptical at first, but this month when I had eighteen consecutive high temps (a clear sign of pregnancy) I took a pregnancy test which came up positive! I ended up miscarrying, but without TCOYF I would have just thought my period was late. Now we know we are fertile and have a much better understanding of my body and that "normal" is a relative term!
