Amazon Review

Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a comprehensive book that explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control. Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realised that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a top-notch resource section. This is recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"Impressively comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guide, complete with case histories and all the latest research which will be of interest not only to those with direct interest in child bearing but also for all those with an interest in understanding more how the human body works." (Yoga and Health)

"A brilliant book that thoroughly explains an all-natural approach to planned pregnancy and birth control. Straightforward and unbiased information on achieving pregnancy and tips for an effective, chemical-free method of contraception." (Pride)

"a bible for many women trying to conceive" (

Before reading this book I considered myself well informed on fertility. I had been charting my temperature for a year without trying for a baby as I had irregular cycles. After 5 months of trying ( and lots of ovulation kits)I bought this book and realised I was not charting accurately enough and missing out the other signs of fertility. On looking back at previous charts, with the help of the book it was clear that I was ovulating most cycles but was missing my most fertile days. Needless to say 2 months later I conceived and our first baby is due at Christmas. Be prepared to learn loads from this book and to be initially slightly embarassed by some of the contents. Don't be put off by the amount of information, you can dip in and out of sections relevant to you. I passed the book onto a friend at work who is trying for a a baby and everyone had a peep. Despite some "eughs" (cervical fluid) everyone learned something. If you are trying to conceive this is an invaluable tool and may save an unnecessary referral to a fertility clinic.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works!! 29 Oct 2005
By A Customer
This is a very informative book and should be read by anybody wanting to get pregnant or just have a better idea of what's happening in their bodies every month. Bought this book in June after spending 18 months trying for baby number 2 (took us 3 years and hormones to conceive my first child). Due to irregular cycles, PCOS and thyroid problems I just bought it out of intrest whilst waiting for the referral for fertility treatment. Although I knew a lot of the facts in the book the system of monitoring was really useful and made me for the first time in my life feel in charge of my cycle. I only ovulate naturally a few times a year but monitoring my cycles suddenly took away all wasted false hopes as I knew I hadn't ovulated and there was no point wasting money on pregnancy test although I was weeks late. After 3 month monitoring I one day waked up seeing the signs of being fertile. Filled with confidence from the book I called my poor husband home home from a conferance on the other side of the country (he thought I was nuts) and guess what, I got pregnant! I realise we had a great deal of luck as well but without this book I would have gone down the route of fertility drugs for the second time in my life by now. It's not a miracle book and it won't cure infertility. But for the many people that like me suffers from subfertility, it give you the chance of optimising your chances naturally before going for fertility treatment.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Women should read this 1 Oct 2006
By Lexie
I purchased this book in desperation after reading the reviews. We had been trying for a baby for over 2 years and we were a seemingly young and healthy couple. We had not yet visited the doctors as i wanted to try everything before I went down that route and I'm glad I waited. After reading the book I started charting immediately. Although the book is very easy to understand it still took me 2 cycles to get used to charting my fluid and recognising fertile quality fluid. On the 3rd month we timed it right for the first time and bingo and I currently 5 weeks pregnant. So fingers crossed that everything goes well. I would recommend any woman to buy this book and don't give up! We were classed as technically Infertile but it was just a matter of timing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, empowering & humorous 4 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This book is great. I'd considered myself to be reasonably well informed about my body and my fertility, but I learned a lot from reading this. The charting system is easy to practise and has been an invaluable tool for me (I'm now pregnant). It was also enlightening - if not disturbing - to realise how traditional medical jargon can often portray women negatively, and it was refreshing to be offered alternative terminologies. I'd like to thank the author for providing readers with a source of accurate, empowering, down-to-earth, non-patronising, non-judgemental information - and a good read into the bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars No more contraceptive pill for me!!! 18 Sep 2006
By BB999
I've been using 'Fertility Awareness' as a method of contraception for nearly 2 years now and find it brilliant!

The book is really clear yet packed with all the info you need to understand your own fertility, whether trying to have/prevent babies.

The signs are so clear when you know what to look for...especially useful if you have long or irregular cycles.

Thanks to this book, I now know that I ovulate 12 days before a period, I know there are usually about 4 days (out of my whole cycle) where I need to take extra precautions, I can ALWAYS predict when my next period will happen from the day I ovulate...and no more nasty pill side effects - it's just brilliant!!!

I'd thoroughly recommend this book to ALL women.

[I'd recommend the Fertility Awareness Method as a form of contraception to any woman in a stable relationship who would be able to handle the risk should it not work for them.]
