Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a comprehensive book that explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control. Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realised that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a top-notch resource section. This is recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I purchased this book after having seen many good reviews on it. I already do use FAM for pregnancy avoidance for many months now. However, I do not recommend this particular book for a novice in FAM! The author's interpretation of the rules, particularly with regards to the less safe pre-ovulation phase, is very lax, which might get you pregnant quicker than you'd like!!! She states the effectiveness of her method with 98% - that is low compared to other studies (European study from 2004, which uses a stricter method and achieves an effectiveness of 99.6%, i.e. as effective as the pill!!!!).
Also, there is some wrong information in this book. The author says that it's ok to measure your basal temperature with a digital thermometer until the beep. Even manufacturers of digital thermometers state in the leaflet that comes with the thermometer that the value at the beep (typically after 30sec) is only a first approximation value. All other literature recommends 3min for a digital thermometer reading and 5min for an analogue thermometer reading. Additionally, she recommends taking your temperature orally, and only if you experience difficulties to take it vaginally. However, all other literature highlights the problems of oral temperature taking as very risky and prone to temperature reading errors. Measure vaginally or rectally if you want to be on the safe side and get clear temperature readings!
If you want to learn FAM with a more effective set of rules I recommend Margaret Nofzinger's book "A cooperative method of natural birth control".
I gave Toni's book 3 stars, because she incorporates a comprehensive and very useful list at the end of the book that explains which medication can influence your cervical fluid or temperature reading, which is unique and invaluable!

An excellent book and one that I believe every woman should read. I am using it for Birth Control purposes - but should I ever decide to have children i'm sure that this would make the whole process much easier. This is an easy and enjoyable book to read - I will be recommending it to all my friends that are trying for children and all the others that aren't and don't want to use the Pill.

Please somebody put this on the school curriculum.
