Product Description

Product Description

Captain Dave Brock, ably assisted by long-term crewmembers Alan Davey and Richard Chadwick, deliver a fine slice of space rock, which is a genre Hawkwind helped innovate and have been at the forefront of for the past 35 years. Contains 10 tracks including a reworking of the classic 'Spirit Of The Age' which features TV personality Mathew Wright on vocals and other tracks that include the previously unreleased 'Angela Android' featuring the vocal talents of Lene Lovich, 'Out Here We Are' and 'Digital Nation' featuring Jez Huggett (Young Musician of the Year) on saxophone, which lends a jazz feel to the sound of the album, and two tracks, 'Sun Ray' and 'A Letter To Robert' (dedicated to the late and former Hawkwind member Robert Calvert), that features English rock legend Arthur Brown. Hawk. 2005.

After a long wait, Hawkwind finally release their long awaited album. From the opening track - Spirit of the Age featuring Matthew Wright and Lene Lovich - to the sheer psychedelic weirdness of Letter to Robert featuring Arthur Brown, the concept of the 'digital' destroying the 'natural' is emphasised by some soon to be classic Hawkwind tracks (Angela Android, To Love A Machine and Digital Nation) interspersed with jazz fuelled space rock tracks such as Out here We Are and Sighs. A Must for any Hawkfan - great concept, great packaging (particularly if you get the special edition with bonus DVD) and a return to form by Captain Brock and crew.
Overall the album is a strange mixture of Space / Jazz / Dance Rock that blends superbly well and is a worthy addition to their vast back catalogue. Best tracks on album - To Love a Machine, Greenback Massacre, Angela Android and Digital Nation. To Love a Machine - very much classic Hawks. Greenback Massacre - blanga of the highest level. Angela Android - great quirky sound and good lyrics (live version on Spirit of the Age single is better though). Digital Nation - a modern day version of Damage of Life in my view. The DVD is a great bonus as well and worthy of watching. Worst Track - Letter to Robert - not that this isn't good - it is - but psychedelic vocal tracks just don't do it for me after a couple of listens. On the whole - reminiscent of classic 80's Hawkwind - fantastic:-)

worth the wait! 16 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD
A cracking piece of space rock for your collection. The opening track, Spirit of the Age, is very interesting. When this song first appeared back in the seventies it was a real chugger: clunking along with a robotic beat long before sequencers were around, but by the time the Hawks had taken it on the road for a couple of years it had changed quite a bit. Just listen to the version on "Live 79" and you'll see what I mean. And this was how the song remained, more or less, for the next 20-odd years (very odd years, you might say!) Until now - they've taken it back to its roots and made it into an old chugger again, although I suspect sequencers, computers, midi etc. had a large part to play this time around. The production is one of the crispest (most crisp?) you'll hear anywhere, and the songwriting is way up there as you'd expect from an album that's taken SOOO long to release. Contributions from Arthur Brown and Simon House, plus new keyboard and reed players, gives the sound an up-to-the-minute feel without losing that "this is Hawkwind" feel (DO NOT PANIC). Final track is called "A Letter to Robert" so Dave is obviously missing the Captain. The only minus point? Well, that cover's a bit crummy isn't it? Get there early and you'll get a free DVD with interviews, promo and live snippets. What are you waiting for?

Excellent new Album 14 Sep 2005
By J. Mann VINE™ VOICE

As a long-time follower of Hawkwind I have to admit I haven't always found their new albums live up to the promise of the classic early 70s albums. However having listened to this album pretty much continuously for the last three days I think it is really good and certainly one of their best.

It is difficult to single out best tracks as there are so many strong contenders, but Sunray with Arthur Brown on vocals is superb.

For anyone worried about the Matthew Wright connection on 'Spirit of the Age' just ignore who he is - the vocals are excellent and there isn't anything contrived about it - it just sounds like Hawkwind.

If you've ever liked Hawkwind buy this - you won't be disappointed.
