Book Description

6 May 2010

When Dominic Gill set out from Alaska on his bicycle, it was to be no ordinary ride. His goal was to reach Ushuaia, the southernmost city in South America, and he was starting off far from confident and with barely enough food to last a week. But Dominic had a secret weapon: the spare seat. His bicycle was a tandem and he would invite strangers to join him on his long journey.

Over 26 months, Dominic covered 18,449 miles down the west coast of the Americas, passed through 15 countries, was looked after by countless strangers, crashed into a banana truck and was attacked by a man with a rusty machete. But Dominic's journey wasn't just an endurance challenge full of derring-do. While sharing his bicycle with 270 strangers who wanted to help him on his way, Dominic discovered a world that differed dramatically from the scare stories and the sensationalist press reports that had shaped his preconceptions about life in the Americas. What started as a physically demanding road trip turned into the inspirational adventure of a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars 287 pages of pure charisma 17 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Dominic Gill's writing is as courageous as his journey, exploring not only the expanse of 15 countries and its peoples but the expanse of the human heart, not the least of which, his own. Almost as if there is a third seat on his bicycle, his writing takes the reader along with him and his companions, through hardship and heartache to exhilaration and joy, all intermingled with his savvy sense of humour. This book shows a journey that is touchable to everyone, and you don't even have to be a cycling enthusiast to thoroughly enjoy every word of his experiences. But be warned, anyone reading this book will be certain to be entertained, touched and fantastically inspired. You might even lose an entire evening of sleep due to lack of ability to put it down. A very hearty "bravo" to Mr. Gill!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent adventure book 30 Dec 2010
By TimP
Format:Paperback
Dom has written a real account of the great adventure that he undertook travelling from Northern Alaska to Southern Patagonia. His highs his lows and the dirty bits in between. His optimism and the relaxed attitude to life and stress are obviously what got him through and introduced him to a great number of people and passengers.
The fact that he took on such an adventure alone on a tandem really illustrates the human spirit and camaraderie that can be found between peoples of different backgrounds, races and even languages.
His raw writing style shows the true emotions which come out in the roller coaster journey with no holes bared and I came away wishing that I could get another few hundred pages. Its just blatantly obvious that he has a lot more stories that could and maybe should have been told!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book! 31 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a great read, I just finished the book and was taking in from cover to cover finding it very hard to put down.

I really enjoyed the extra dimension of having the stories of the stokers and the relationships that built with each new arrival to that back seat. It can't be an easy task riding alone, but even harder having to ride with a stranger.

This has given me yet more motivation (if that is possible) from my solo JOGLE that I am going to take part in. I know from now on I am going to say hi more often to all those cycle tourers I see out on the roads when I am on the bike.

Well done on the journey Dom, now to track down the documentary you did to go with the journey

1.0 out of 5 stars The ride is better than the read.
Dominic Gills's ability to ride is better than his ability to write, sadly. He manages to turn the good idea (not his) to take a tandem from tip to toe of the Americas with a... Read more

I've read many cycling 'road' books ... all pretty much the same e.g. rider meets nice folk, rider meets bad folk, bike breaks, get lonely, etc. Read more

I am a keen cyclist and love adventure books. Sadly many such books are about the miles traveled in a day rather than the places and culture of places writers explore. Read more
