Product Description

Nobody ever goes upstairs in Margaret's house. So what is making the strange thumping noises up there? And why is there a toy rabbit under the kitchen table?

Margaret's Ghost is just one of a collection of short stories consisting mainly of horror and science fiction, ranging from a classic gothic tale – Jack Trevellyn – to the Wyndhamesque Victim of Fortune, and the modern Waiting for Daddy, with its spine-chilling twist.

There is also the occasional excursion into romance with A Castle in Spain and Jess's Girl.
But most of these tales take you to a place which is not quite as it seems.

It's bedtime now. Time to go upstairs. Time to take a look. Just one look.

WARNING: Do not exceed the stated dose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Read 12 Jun 2011
By AndyH
Format:Kindle Edition
I must admit that I really enjoyed this, I thought it was one of the best things I've read for a while, certainly from a new author. There's a great range and variety of threads and ideas, some on the darker side but some full of beauty and hope. I have always loved short stories, the demands of economy and precision required, the respect afforded by the author to the reader regarding our capacity to fill in the blanks demanded by the format. At moments I am reminded of the short stories of M. R. James, Philip K Dick or even Stephen King when writing in other contexts than horror. Definitely worth a look.

This is a real page-turner, full of gripping, spine-tingling tales, along with a romance or two and a delightfully humorous story about a grandmother who just does not smile. I couldn't put it down.Take One at Bedtime

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating and diverse read 30 Aug 2011
By Podenco
Format:Kindle Edition
This collection of short stories is (to use a tired phrase) un-putdownable. Every one different, some horror stories redolent of Stephen King, some love stories (but definitely not in a Mills and Boon type of way!), but each one gripping in its own way. My wife enjoyed it immensely too and we have quite different tastes. The only thing wrong with it (if it can be described as a negative thing) is that I was left wanting more. I hope to see more from this exciting new author.

Jenny Twist's collection of short stories `Take One at Bedtime' sounds like very good advice. Being greedy though, I took two...and sometimes three. They are the ideal length for a gripping bedtime read - depending on your will-power. Beautifully-crafted little cameos of life - each one completely different yet no less skilfully drawn - this collection of stories is really excellent.

From wronged housewives seeking revenge in sinister ways or to reward themselves in delightful indulgence to fascinating tales of haunting parallel dimensions or alternative universes; from heart-warming stories of love and faith to spine-chilling horror and ghostly tales. It's impossible to list them all, but thanks to Jenny Twist's scope as a storyteller, all tastes in fiction are catered for here and every reader will discover his or her favourite.

My favourites were `The Apple Tree' and `Margaret's Ghost' and my only complaint was that these were not full length novels. All the stories were thought-provoking but these two in particular drew me completely into their worlds and left me desperately wanting more.

`Antonio's Grandmother' is a delightful story of an austere, unsmiling matriarch who finally learns to smile. In `The Scam' and `Mistaken Identity' the ingenious crimes of two completely different sets of people receive their come-uppance in surprising ways. Another great favourite of mine was `The Problem with Mother' - because, of course, mother's `problem' turned out to be something rather unusual and quite wonderful.

I don't know how Jenny Twist succeeds in creating such real characters and big plots in short story format but there is no doubt in my mind that she does so extremely successfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book That You Must Read! 9 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A book of short stories don't usually appeal to me but this one is absolutely brilliant!!!!! Take One at Bedtime by Jenny Twist is an absolute must if you like very well written spine shivering stories and others that are more heartwarming, but all of them have a real twist in the tail and certainly not what you expect.

I took this book at bedtime and just could not stop reading it, stayed awake most of the night till I had finished it. I have read it again and enjoyed it just as much. I do think that every one of these stories well deserve to be a full size novel in their own right, how about it Mrs Twist? I realy can't recommend this book highly enough, if you are reading these reviews with a thought to buying Take One at Bedtime then do go ahead and buy it you won't be disappointed but you might lose a nights sleep.
