This is the story of Dolan Crane, cousin and 'third' to Cody, who had his own tale in Wild Oats book 1 TAKE ME, and Tracy Marx. Having read the first book, which had a HEA and many scenes of hot sex, both 'couple' and menage, I was sort of expecting the same here, but the author did not really deliver.
Dolan is one of two established vets in a cowboy town and he expects to take over the practice when his elderly partner retires, when fellow-vet Tracy arrives on the scene, having recently gone thru a divorce from a 'vanilla' man. Her first lover since her divorce, Rowdy, is Dolan's best mate, who has just moved to town (and from what I gleaned, may well have his own tale soon). I couldn't see the supposed passion between Tracy and Dolan, as he resented her for going behind his back and making contact with his established clients, and she felt furtive doing this, but each seemed to resent the other from the start. Tracy then agrees to a night of debauchery with Rowdy and a third...who turns out to be Dolan, and suddenly they are all over each other, despite not liking each other and being would-be rivals? There was only one instance of menage, with IMO, Rowdy being the more forceful and dom-type, and supposedly with Dolan and Tracy starting already to have deeper feelings for each other.
Anyway, the tale does not progress as quick as the previous book, though yes, the leads get their HEA, complete with ready-made family (Dolan does an abour turn and suddenly wants to be a daddy to Tracy's orphaned nephew, despite always 'using protection as he did not want to be a daddy any time soon'). The author introduces a baddy just for the sake, I felt, of making the tale a little longer and introducing an estrangement, but I couldn't really see how this added to the tale.
Yes, it read fluently enough, but if like me, you've read previous books by this author, including the excellent 5* A TALL DARK COWBOY and BOUND FOR THE HOLIDAYS, you will find that this is not up to par. Readable yes, a Keeper - no!
