RTE Guide

'The opening chapter is so moving and powerful that you will not want to put the book down until the very last page. TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW should definitely be on your summer must-read list'

Product Description

Most of us can remember a defining moment in our lives. A split second when time stood still and our lives changed forever. For Lily Ormond, that moment came late one night when she answered a knock on the door and discovered that while she'd been smashing garlic and rosemary and watching the soaps, her sister Alison had drowned. Coming to terms with losing her only sibling and best friend was devastating, becoming a mother overnight to Ali's three-year-old son Charlie was mind-boggling, but discovering that her identical twin had been leading a secret life for years was almost Lily's undoing. And so begins a journey linked with four men who'd been part of a life she hadn't even known existed. A journey that forces Lily to come to terms with a father who'd never really cared for her, a child who needs her too much and a sister who wasn't what she seemed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take A Look At Me Now, 17 Oct 2007
This review is from: Take a Look at Me Now (Paperback)
Lilly and Alison are identical twins, yet couldn't be more different in personality. Losing their mother at the age of five left their father bitter, unforgiving and aloof towards his daughters. To overcome this coldness, Alison took on the role of leader, making a solemn promise that she would always protect her sister - no matter what.

By a cruel twist of fate, however, Alison loses her life to the sea leaving Lilly bereft and sole custodian to her sister's three-year-old son, Charlie. As she copes with the loss of her sister and the responsibility of becoming a parent overnight, Lilly slowly begins to uncover the secret life her sister had been involved in - high class prostitution.

To try and piece this shocking revelation together, Ali seeks out the four men her sister was involved with and tries to get to know them, partly out of curiosity but mainly with the intent of destroying their so-called normal lives.

Take A Look At Me Now is women's fiction with a difference. Anita Notaro has tackled a very delicate and taboo subject, turning it on its head as she lets her readers look at things from the male perspective. By no means is this author condoning prostitution but she is showing both sides. Why exactly do men pay for sex? Or is it something else they're looking for? Pick up a copy and find out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish, 23 Jan 2009
By wendywubb "wubb" (North East England) - See all my reviews
This is one of the worst books I've ever read. I only persisted to the end to discover the 'shocking revelation' which, as it turned out, was blatantly obvious from the first few pages.

The main character, Alison, has no redeeming features at all. She is written as some sort of inspirational heroine type but must be one of the most singularly selfish literary characters ever, demonstrating little grief at the tragic loss of her sister (a death in circumstances which I found difficult to believe) not to mention her total insensitivity towards her orphaned nephew.

The little boy is rescued at the last minute whilst his mother drowns on a beach. Having lost his mother, the only close family he has left is his Aunt Alison, his mother's identical twin who had lived with them both before the tragedy. Despite his trauma, his charming Aunt thinks it's a great idea to ship him off to a relative in the country until she can find them a nice little house - by the sea!

Where are social services I wonder? Are we to believe that an orphaned little boy can be left in a will, like a pocket watch, without any care agencies even asking who will now be his guardian?

Fortunately, the heartbroken Alison is so busy spending her nephew's inheritance (supposedly in some sort of trust for the little boy) that the lad is spared the horror of reliving his near death experience for about a year. Save the odd Sunday visits here and there, Alison is so occupied by her new business and her numerous dates that she just hasn't got the time to find a house. Still, he's quite obviously a particularly resilient little fella, barely shedding a tear over his mother's death and only referring her once throughout the whole book

I've never felt moved to write a review before but this was such drivel I simply have to warn potential readers. How this stuff gets published is beyond me.
