5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly their best album, 31 Oct 2005
By Mr. J. J. Niland (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Herbaliser's previous albums have been pretty cohesive i.e. they all sound pretty much the same- funky hip-hop and jazz-tinged instrumentals, with some excellent collaborations with vocalists such as What What (aka Jean Grae), MF Doom and Roots Manuva. It's a formula that works well, and it's a formula they have perfected in 'Take London'.

There are some fantastic singles on this album- 'Generals' is a fantastic posse cut by Jean Grae and friends, and brings back the sort of quality group tracks that were the staple of mid-90s hip-hop e.g. Wu-Tang. The Herbaliser also demonstrate that they can slow things right down, demonstrated best by the wonderfully relaxing 'If You Close Your Eyes'.

However, like the other Herbaliser albums, the tracks on 'Take London' are best enjoyed as an album i.e. if you are going to listen to one track, you really should listen to them all. This is the sort of album you'd pop on after getting back from a hard-days work and you are opening that ice cold beer. It's far more than the sum of it's parts.

In conclusion: With 'Take London', The Herbaliser retain their spot as the most hip-hop orientated act on the Ninja Tune roster. If you liked their previous work, you'll love this. It really is impressive that they have managed to consistently produce to such a high standard.

Excellent work. One of the best albums of the year. Check out Generals and Gadget Funk for my highlights. You should buy this, it will enhance any collection out there. They're back to their best and can't wait to see them live next month.

Another Herbaliser album that sounds just like the last one and, indeed, the one before that. And, to be honest, they all sound like watered down Lalo Schifrin. Just think, the great Lalo wasn't even doing beats for hiphop heads when he made his music but I'd rather crank his creations than an insipid facsimilli of it. Just think, if Lalo hadn't made music would the Herbaliser even have a career?
