Review

"An absolute roller coaster ride through the late seventies punk era and Sheffield's synth dominance that followed." --Michael Glover, arts critic for The Independent

"When it closed it was like a part of Sheffield's cultural history had been wiped out. It's good to see it brought back to life once more."
--John Quinn, The Star

Product Description

The Limit was a legend of a venue.

It was Sheffield's Hacienda but, while its Lancashire counterpart famously lost a fortune, this place became a licence to print money with its management living the lives of rock stars.

The Limit was pivotal to Sheffield's electro revolution of the early '80s staging seminal gigs of Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Comsat Angels and others.

The venue helped break bands that went on to national and international domination - everyone from U2 to B-52s played landmark shows there.

It was the subject of one of UK nightlife's biggest ever Customs and Excise raids, with every member of its senior management team arrested in a bid to find evidence of a missing £250,000.

The `efficiency' of Limit bouncers became the stuff of legend - club staff became targets for attack: many of them took up bodybuilding alongside the bouncers to be ready for the worst.

The Limit machine was untouched by the Winter of Discontent, the early '80s recession and the miners' strike.

It hosted 13 years of club nights from early punk, to mid-eighties goth to the early rave and dance.

It was so successful that it bankrolled the transformation of Sheffield Lyceum from derelict eyesore to state-of-the-art entertainment venue staging everything from Joe Cocker's Sheffield homecoming to shows spanning The Clash and Simple Minds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rock n' Roll ride to the Limit!, 28 Oct 2009
This review is from: Take it to "The Limit" (Paperback)
Eager anticipation has awaited this major event in Sheffield pop culture heritage literature and after just completing a full read from beginning to end, I can proudly state very LOUDLY! 'IT'S BEEN WELLWORTH THE WAIT! Local author Neil Anderson has here managed to locate and pinpoint the very essence of what made the Limit club special for its vast array of paying (or not paying) customers of the 13 years of its legendary lifetime (1978 - 1991). It quite simply was designed for the outsiders! The Punk Rockers, the floppy fringed electro wierdos, ska obsessed Mods, rockabilly - flat tops, the Goths, rockers, techno pioneering DJ's, the New Romantics, down at heels students and the flamboyant party goer who wished to ignore the dress codes of nearby City centre straight-laced club culture and like the rest of us - the afore mentioned menagerie of youth cults - be ourselves! The soon to be famous, the one hit wonders and musical icons of all the left of centre musical genres mingled with at least an handful of the above gangs and a great time was had by all.
The story is told with a refreshingly anecdotal approach that soaks up the experiences of some of the many music fans that trood the sticky carpeted, questionably low alcohol selling venue with one of the slightest of stages this side of miniature lego land's very own theatre. The main players are given ample coverage along with their backgrounds, whilst the photos tell a story of their own: coming to life alongside countless humourous memories and stories of growing up in surroundings so dark and carefree you most likely shared drinks with strangers without even knowing it.
There are reflections on gigs from the likes of the Human League, Pulp, Robert Plant, Specials, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Adam and the Ants, Joy Division and many more alongside memories of lesser known acts, local neer do wells and non gig clubbing nights of the venues later days. The lay out is superb, unpretentious and easy to divulge in. there are lists of bands played, flyers, posters, tickets and photos of a priceless charachter.... just like the subject itself. It is very true to proclaim - This is a book with a real taste of the Limits spirit...
The story that this book replicates is so unique it deserves a film being devoted to it. The screenplay is already written, the stars are mostly (but sadly not all) still with us and the credits go to Neil and everyone that understood why going to the Limit was an experience that really did take you to the Limit.

Here is its highly reccomended companion book (Book of the year on Sex Pistols site God save the Sex Pistols) - which also has lots about the Limit club in it Our Generation: The Punk and Mod Children of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS OF SECRET AFFAIR, SPECIALS, GENERATION X, THE TRUTH AND STUNT KITES AT THE LIMIT CLUB!

5.0 out of 5 stars All alone at the end of the evening............, 12 Mar 2010

Of course as soon as I got the book, I flicked through the pages hoping to see myself slumped in the corner or leaping up and down to "I fought the law", but sadly Neil had not managed to find any pictures of me. Luckily though, there were plenty of other reminders, like U2 playing to an audience of 12 - and I was one of them - when I was almost stood on Edge's pedal board. I had - still have in fact - one of those pink tickets that admitted you for free on Wednesday nights. I was a bit old to be a student and I certainly am not a nurse, but Martin on the door never seemed to mind. Thursdays always involved being late for work with a massive hangover and an early night. Thanks Neil for writing down this Sheffield legend.

This club's a legend. The anecdotes contained here are a superb reflection of what was to many the greatest club in the UK.
