I pre-ordered this excitedly, having had a ton of fun playing the 2004 PC version and hoping for an update. More thorough background reading would have told me this was just a port of the PC game rather than a new version, but nothing could have prepared me for the minor but significant changes that have been made in the transition, nearly all of which detract from the gameplay.
The strategic turn-based battling to sack cities has been replaced by a quick point-and-shoot mini-game which, while fun the first couple of times, quickly becomes monotonous. You can no longer land your ships anywhere, so finding treasure, lost relatives and ancient cities is now just a matter of blundering about the coast until you hit the arbitrary spot that reveals the goal. The new Captain's Chamber feature is just an opportunity to treat your character like a pirate Barbie by dressing him in pointless costumes. Not so bad in itself, but the acquisition of these costumes now seems to be the main point of talking to mysterious strangers, dancing with the less attractive daughters, and capturing fugitives. These elements of the game used to push the story forward by giving you money, valuable artefacts or information on quests, which now seem to have been marginalised in favour of foolish and unnecessary wardrobe expansion.
The Wii-specific changes are trifling at best and seriously disruptive at worst. Waving the remote around like a sword is fine for duels, but it makes dancing with governors' daughters nigh-on impossible, as the timing of the strokes is a mess and doesn't seem to correspond to the music, the daughters' hand movements or the arrows/text on the screen.
Also, it's a port of a 2004 game with 2004 graphics, which look OK on a little computer screen but bloody awful on a big telly.
Pirates is a great game, but if you want high seas excitement and adventure, don't for the love of god get the Wii version. You can pick up the PC game for about a fiver, and it's miles better than this shoddy, badly-thought-out cash-in.
