Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review:

In a nutshell:
TV’s (or at least DVD’s) most outrageous cartoon family get their own video game that not only looks just like the show but is just as funny and offensive.

The lowdown:
Being cancelled may have been the best thing that’s ever happened to Family Guy, because ever since it was brought back it’s been more popular than ever – why it’s even got its own video game now. As with most licensed games it’s not exactly breaking down any gameplay paradigms, but at least it’s got some quality gags to fall back on. You can control one of three characters: Brain the dog (whose levels are all stealth based), Peter the dad (whose missions are basically scrolling beat ‘em-ups) and baby Stewie. There’s also a lot of very short mini-games, but none of it really adds up to being more than an interactive background for the game’s jokes. For most Family Guy fans that’s going to be fine though.

Most exciting moment:
As you might expect the best bits of the game involve Stewie, the family’s psychotic baby. They’re basically platform levels with Stewie jumping, gliding and shooting his way to world domination. He’s also got a mind control ray for taking over adults and there’s some fun on-the-rails shooting sections and into-the-screen chases.

Since you ask:
The game’s script is written by series creator Seth McFarlane, who also provides voiceovers along with series regulars Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Patrick Warburton and Adam West. There’s even a bunch of regular guest stars including Wallace Shawn, Charles Durning, and Adam Corolla.

The bottom line:
Good for Family Guy fans, not so good for everyone else.-HARRISON DENT

Manufacturer's Description

The first video game based on the hugely popular Family Guy TV show, the Family Guy game features the same outrageous humour all the fans know and love. Play through three stories that intersect in typical Family Guy fashion. Be Stewie and match wits against his arch-nemesis half-brother Bertram as they vie to take over the world. Take control of Peter and fight to stop Mr. Belvedere who he thinks is trying to take over the world. Slip on a collar and down a martini as Brian and attempt to escape prison and prove your innocence in a puppy parental case gone awry.

Fun:
I'll say up front that I am a huge Family Guy fan. I just ordered Season 5 along with the game and episode one had me literally crying with laughter. So when I decided to pop the game in the PS2, this game had a lot to live up to. And on some levels it delivers. The characters that we know and love all voiced by the original talent deliver some really laugh-out-loud funny moments. The graphics are consistent with the show and there are some nice details (leave Peter alone for long enough and he starts playing with his earwax, for instance). The sounds are superb with lots of the sort of music you'd hear on the show.

However, it's obvious that the game designers have tried hard to ape some of the features of the TV show. The self-referential gimmicks are great (a Marcel Marceau type mime artist on the other side of the 'invisible wall' so often encountered in this sort of game is a master stroke). But the non-sequiturs that work so well in the TV show spoil the flow of the game. Typically the player must complete a simple mini-game to receive a reward but the games are either laughably simple (alternately tapping two buttons for instance) or too obscure to work out the objective in the three or four seconds you get.

Unfortunately, it is not only the non sequitur episodes that mar the narrative of the game. The game flits between different characters with little ongoing link between the individual stories and the player is left somewhat disoriented and unable to really enjoy some of the gorgeous details that the designers have provided.

More concerning still is the control system. All of the characters move well on flat ground and there is 'realism' in the movements. However, there is no real ability to control the camera to get an idea of perspective or depth and this makes the platforming parts of the game tortuous. Whilst the right stick does provide a tiny bit of movement it is very limited. In one particularly frustrating example, a miniaturized Stewie must navigate Peter's left lung (which is soooooo Family Guy!) But without a way of judging the relational positions of the platforms this level turned into 30 minutes of frustration.

All in all, if you are fan, there is something very satisfying about being able explore the Griffin family home (complete with Evil Monkey in the closet) and the gags and performances will make you laugh. If you don't appreciate the comedy value and look at this as a gamer, you are likely to be disappointed.

Fun:
The trouble with creating a game from a TV show is trying to keep both fans of the show and gamers happy.
On the first count, the game delivers. All the main characters are included as well as characters such as Quagmire (giggity giggity), Mayor Adam West, and Bertram (Stewie's nemisis), and they're all voiced by the people who do the show, so there's no embarrassingly bad soundalikes. The script is as sharp as the tv show as well, with close to the knuckle wit and laugh out loud one liners. So far so good...
Each level is played by a different character with different moves and objectives. For example, you start off playing as Stewie, complete with a mind control device, and a raygun. You fight your way through the hospital trying to get to Peter before Death gets there first. The controls are straightforward, and you it doesn't take long to figure out what to do. Playing as Peter, you get to beat up people for snacks, including grannies and small children (this isn't a game for the easily offended but then Family Guy's never been known for being PC!), it's a side scrolling level similar to the old skool Streets of Rage.
The graphics aren't exactly cutting edge, but that adds to the charm of the game.
However, the actual gameplay element is dull and repetitive, so I've only given it a 3 star fun rating -

Family Guy Review 9 Sep 2007
Fun:
This game surprised me a lot as i didn't think it would be all that great but as a family guy fan i bought it and gave it a chance, i have to say, best 5 quid i've spent. The storylines for the three characters (Brian, Stewie and Peter) are hilarious and reflect the series very much. The great things about the game are the real voice-overs and the small cameo appearances by characters such as the greased up deaf guy, the evil monkey etc give the game more depth and shows deep thought went into making it. Complete with flashbacks into the past that have become a trademark for the show (Brian burying 'Quagmire in the Blair Fist Project) and small snippets of past shows that only family guy fans will understand, this game is a cert for fans.
