Product Description

He was to be her future. But what of his past…?When Holly Barrett meets Jack Dane, she falls rapidly and passionately in love for the first time in her life. Within six weeks they are married and Jack opens up a whole new world for Holly and her young daughter Katy, offering them a way out of the small-town Massachusetts existence in which they have become trapped. But Holly knows very little about the enigmatic Englishman who has come into their lives so unexpectedly. Parts of his life story seem destined to remain forever shrouded in shadow yet, happier than she has ever been, Holly sees only interference and jealousy when her beloved grandfather, Henry, and best friend, Anna, tentatively start to raise questions about Jack’s pastHowever, as the truth starts to emerge, it soon becomes frighteningly possible that everything that Holly has ever believed in could be a terrible lie. And that rather than marrying the man who will save her and Katy from their safe but small world, Holly may have brought a monster into all their lives...

Thought provoking 11 Jan 2011
By Andrea Smith TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The book doesn't get off to the best start, describing how Holly and Jack meet on a bus. It's quite slow moving and you do need some patience as initially it feels like wading through treacle. However I would urge that you give it a chance as, despite being a slow burner, it really is a great read and it does become unputdownable. Tainted evokes a mixture of emotions in the reader, from sadness and grief, hope, disbelief and at times it chills you to the core.

The characters are not all likeable, but they are not meant to be, and I think the fact that the reader becomes so angry at Holly's naivety just highlights what a good job the author has done with the characters. Also, it's interesting to see Holly come out of her shell as the book progresses - going from an innocent girl to Jack's wife. Jack himself is portrayed very successfully as a complex character and there is much to think about even after you've finished the book. It is not cut and dried and the ending leaves you wanting more.

I haven't given it a full 5 stars as I didn't really like the constant use of italics and also I thought that the book jumped around randomly at times - there would be lots of chapters in the third person and all of a sudden it would be in the first person, either Jack or Katy. That didn't work for me. Nonetheless, I did really enjoy this book and I would definitely read another book by Brooke Morgan.

Brilliant! 24 Dec 2010
By Amy
Format:Paperback
I thoroughly enjoyed Brooke Morgan's second novel 'Trapped' and so I was eager to read her debut, which I also immensely enjoyed.

I found this one to be slightly slower to get in to to start with but once I got about 100 pages in I couldn't tear myself away from the story and ended up reading the last 300 odd pages in one go as I was so despeerate to find out what was going to happen.

I did at times find the main character Holly to be slightly blind and slightly ignornant as to what was going on around her although, I could also see why she was this way. I also found the character of Jack unlikeable from the start of the book - but maybe he was meant to be. I did on the otherhand find Holly's Grandfather Henry to be an extremely likeable character and very much a wise and good family man and five year old Katy was a delight to read about.

This book is full of suspense and intrigue and you never quite know where it is going to go next and where things will lead to. I would defintely recommend this book along with Brooke Morgan's second novel Trapped. Both books show that Brooke Morgan has a real talent for penning psychological thrillers and that she is one to watch.

Gripping 15 Sep 2009
By crime reader TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
After a slightly slow start where I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy this, I suddenly became totally gripped by it and could hardly put it down. The main characters, Holly, Henry and Katy, are so likeable and the little seaside town sounds wonderful, and the villain, though starting off as a bit of a charmer, suddenly becomes very menacing.
The only small disappointment for me was that as the culmination of all the events reaches a climax around 40 pages or so before the end of the book, I was always waiting for another great plot twist, which never happened. I thought these last 40 pages were a bit unnecessary, although the last couple of lines certainly give you something to think about! If I could I would probably give it 4 and a half stars, but as I can't I'll give it 5 because the bulk of the book is a taut page turner and I would definitely look forward to the author's next book.
