This is a very interesting book about the form of Tai Chi Chuan known as the Beijing Short Form. This was developed in China in 1956, as a means of standardising a short, compact version of the much longer traditional Yang Tai Chi Chuan system. A number of masters were invited to the China National Sports Commision in Beijing and given the task of creating a balanced and easily accessible form of Tai Chi Chuan, suitable for all people. The form created consists of 24 sections (or 'steps'), that are logically sequenced and presented in such a manner so that the movements themselves start off with low technical requirement, increasing with difficulty as the form progresses.

The paperback (1996) edition contains 144 numbered pages and has a Foreword, Introduction and 5 chapters, and is extensively illustrated throughout:

1) Tai Chi Ch'uan & Qicong in Chinese Tradition.
2) Tai Chi Ch'uan & Qicong: Antidote to Today's Stress.
3) Tai Chi Ch'uan & Principles of Athletic Movements.
4) Learning Tai Chi Ch'uan & Qicong.
5) Beijing Short Form - in Pictures.

This book was originally published in German. The book is based upon the knowledge of a husband and wife team from China - Paifang Zhou and Lin Boyan - and their German student Wolfgang Metzger, with Paifang Zhou demonstrating the Tai Chi Ch'uan movements in the photographs, and Lin Boyan demonstrating the Qicong. This book contains a very useful historical survey of Tai Chi Ch'uan and Qicong practise within Chinese history and culture and provides an interesting assessment of 'qi', or 'energy' as a product of correct breathing (kong qi), food intake (gu qi), essential energy inherited from parents (yuan qi), and how all these aspects merge into overall energy (zheng qi). There is also a very interesting assessment of the medical benefits of longterm Tai Chi Ch'uan practise. This book manages to present both the modern and traditional face of China with equal success, and has a natural charm associated with its design. It is an authoritative account of an important subject.
