Product Description

Album Description

Taffetas bring together a diverse range of influences to the Afro-Portuguese and Mandingue music traditions. Guitarist and composer, Marc Liebeskind, is well known for his Jazz and Blues performances with the Marc Liebeskind Quartet. He is equally skilled in African, Brazilian and classical North Indian styles. Christophe Erard has received acclaim for his mastery of traditional African and Eastern instruments such as the Balaphone Burkinabe, and for his work as a double-bassist. The two Swiss musicians are joined by Ibrahima Galissa whose roots are firmly planted in the Kora playing traditions of Guinea-Bissau. Taffetas’ self-titled album sets lyrical exploration against powerful African instrumentals.

About the Artist

Taffetas is a trio of highly talented musicians from a variety of different backgrounds. Ibrahima Galissa was born in Guinea-Bissau, whilst Marc Liebeskind and Christophe Erard are both Swiss. Ibrahima Galissa inherited tradition of playing the kora, an African harp, from his family whilst growing up in Guinea-Bissau. His legendary style & dexterity have seen him perform with a number of world famous artists. He has guested on studio albums for Dieuf Dieuf, Alseni Camara and Youssou N’Dour, and has also recorded his own eponymous album. He has been working with Christophe Erard for over 8 years, since the two collaborated in Kabwa and he currently resides in Lisbon, when he is not touring with Taffetas.

Christophe Erard became a choral scholar at an early age, and began his life as an instrumentalist studying the classical guitar at the age of 19. An interest in world music inspired him to take up the African bolingo, a guitar-like instrument from Zaire two years later. He has since mastered over 40 traditional instruments, including the pentatonic balafon, the diatonic balafon, and the West African cordofone.

Ibrahima and Christophe met Marc in 2000 during one of their live performances and by 2002 the trio were playing together on a regular basis. Marc Liebeskind is a guitarist and composer of renown. Liebeskind has been heavily involved in African music throughout his career, and in 1999 he decided to travel in order to explore his interest in genres such as Mandingue and Indian classical music. He followed his growing passion for world music to Benares, where he learned the Indian classical technique, playing with masters of the sitar, the tabla and the sarod. Later in his career he would continue his journey to Bamako and Ouagadougou in Africa, which was where he learned to play ensemble music with the kora. In order to complement his new playing style, Marc was forced to redesign his guitar, and now switches regularly between his own customized version and the regular acoustic variety. Over the course of his musical career Marc has worked with a remarkable range of different! ensembles: he toured Africa, South America and Europe for around 12 years with the Marc Liebeskind Quartet, and has also appeared in Delhi with the group Tassir in 2001. Marc has been heavily involved with African music throughout his career, and has performed with one of the world’s great djembe players, Adama Dramé.

Stunning 22 Dec 2004
By SMG
Format:Audio CD
I heard Bob Harris play the track "Fanta" on the radio when I was driving home from work in the early hours of the morning. I drove home repeating "Taffetas" to myself all the way home so I wouldn't forget the name of the group. When I got home I fired up the PC and ordered it before I went to bed. Ordering the album on the basis of one track heard on the radio seemed a little risky but I haven't been disappointed. The music is gorgeous. This is definitely "chilling out" music and should be enjoyed with the lights turned down and a glass of something in one's hand! I feel my heart rate slow down and my muscles relax when I listen to this album. It is full of sunshine and peace and beuatiful melodies.

Sublime 4 Aug 2008
By Martyn VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This album is the product of three very good musicians melding their styles to create some lovely soundscapes, mainly with African sounding melodies, but all of high quality and instantly likeable.

Although in some senses innovative, there is no edginess here - no unexpected notes or surprising chord changes, but the musicianship and the melodies prevent it from ever becoming 'muzak'.

Instead the effect is to mesmerise and intrigue, and this really is a great album to relax and unwind to.
