The Taf Toys Four Seasons Playmat is a large (100 cm x 100 cm), thickly padded and very soft Baby play mat designed specifically with newborn babies in mind. The side panels can be raised to create a cosier environment. There are 4 vibrantly coloured base panels that surround the extremely soft fabric centre and each depicts a different season of the year in baby book style. The 'illustrations' in black and white on the side panels (that can be raised) visually stimulate the smallest of babies. The comical, loveable illustrations, all with smiley faces, are by renowned French designer Alain Crozon, and help to stimulate parent-baby interaction and baby's emotional intelligence. Unfortunately I was disappointed with this playmat. It was smaller than I expected (admittedly I should have checked the dimensions) but looking at the images - particularly the image with the baby in the centre of the mat, I believed it to be much bigger.
I was also disappointed with the sides of the mat when raised, again they appear much bigger in the images when in actual fact they are not very deep at all. Nor are they strengthened in anyway - when my baby started roll, she was able to roll right over the sides and out onto the floor. The purpose of the mat (for me) was to give my baby a safe space to play as we have hard flooring but this wasnt the case. I had hoped that the sides would have been slightly 'structured' in some way.
Having said that, I have decided to keep the playmat as it is good quality, the colours are great and the crinkle features and detachable toys amuse baby. It doesn't fulfil its intended purpose for me but is great for taking with us when we go visiting as it folds up and fits into its original carrycase which is handy.
