From Amazon.co.uk

Tadpole is a clever tale of a young man infatuated with an older woman, featuring a brilliant comic performance by the wonderful Bebe Neuwirth. Tadpole is the childhood nickname of Oscar (Aaron Stanford), a precocious 15-year-old who disdains girls his own age and nurses an infatuation for his fortysomething stepmother, Eve (Sigourney Weaver). But while home from school for Thanksgiving, Oscar gets drunk and falls in bed with Eve's best friend, Diane (Neuwirth), leading to a series of painfully funny scenes in which Oscar fears revelation while trying, desperately, to woo Eve. The strong script is undercut by flat, unimaginative direction, but every scene with Neuwirth flares into high comedy. She doesn't even have to speak; a sardonic glance from Diane sends Oscar spinning into panic, and Neuwirth handles the part with delicious feline malice. It also features John Ritter as Oscar's academic father. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Sigourney Weaver (Heartbreakers, Galaxy Quest), John Ritter (TV’s Felicity, Three’s Company) and Bebe Neuwirth (Liberty Heights, The Faculty) lead an outstanding cast in a seductively irreverent coming-of-age comedy that critics absolutely adored! Oscar Grubman (Aaron Stanford - X2) is no ordinary 15-year-old. He’s suave, smart, cultured and has one thing on his mind: older women! But be careful what you wish for, Oscar! When a sexy 40-something friend of the family (Neuwirth) actually takes Oscar up on his infatuation, he suddenly finds himself in way over his head! Winner of the Director’s Award and nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival – you won’t believe how the sophisticated fun takes off … as the romantic complications pile up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining And Slightly Different 21 Sep 2010
Format:DVD
I thoroughly enjoyed this little film, which I came across entirely by accident. The premise is intriguing with a cast - Sigourney Weaver, John Ritter, Bebe Neuwirth - guaranteed to provide real acting, although young Aaron Stanford easily steals the show (Bebe gives him a good run for the money though). The script is articulate and witty (quite rare qualities these days) and intelligence is displayed in all other departments. Apart from Bebe Neuwirth's vampish turns, it's not a lough out loud comedy - but you find yourself smiling a lot while watching it.

My wife and I repeatedly commented during the film about how much it reminded us of Francois Truffaut's films about Antoine Doinel. The similarities between Oscar and Antoine are truly striking and the overall French flavour of the piece is surely not accidental. In fact, the Truffaut influence is what really endeared the film to us.

Yes, the running time is somewhat short but you still feel satisfied at the end. Tadpole is a film for anyone who appreciates something a little bit different.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable coming of age movie 26 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
At one point threatening to be a cinematic Catcher in the Rye, Tadpole was an enjoyable coming of age movie. The boy’s infatuation with his stepmother is a symptom of his wider feeling that he’s more mature than his peers; a feeling that eventually gives way to a coming of age in reverse.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed 3 Nov 2011

I've seen a few coming of age and teen movies recently and mostly they have been quite awful. This is the best of the bunch. Its certainly well acted and very short. The runtime of the film (without credits) is only 68 minutes.

Another reviewer has compared the film with Truffaut and I'm sure that is a valid comparison. For me (not having seen much Truffaut) this seemed to be influenced by Woody Allen. Thats no bad thing. At his best (Annie Hall, Manhattan etc) Allen made fabulous films that were both funny and made serious points along the way. This seems to copy the Allen style, in its use of black title boards with quotes, and even the subject matter of a very young person obsessed and/or in-love with an older person is classic Woody Allen terroitory.

The plot here is of a 15 year boy who is obsessed with his step-mother, but has a one-night stand with - ah but that would be a spoiler so I won't go there.

The problem then is its lack of originality, and as other reviewers have said it really isn't that funny. But it has an endearing quality which I can't quite put my finger on, so its worth getting if you can pick it up cheap.
