I only ordered this because I had a job lined up to somehow stick or tack aluminium sheet insulating foil to the back of my wooden garage door. How did this fare compared to my Black and Decker electric tacker (that I've had for many, many years) and which I was intending to use?

Incidentally, although this is called a 'hammer tacker' you don't use it *with* a hammer; rather you use it *like* a hammer and just swing the tack head as if you were driving a nail into a piece of wood, except you automatically drive in a staple instead. Who knew?

PROS
----
It was quick to 'slap' this tacker onto the sheet foil (with some gusto it must be said) which then drove the 8mm staples right into the wood holding the foil firm. Depending on how hard you whack the stapler against whatever you're tacking depends on how far the staple gets driven into the material. After a while it was easy to judge how hard to tack to get the staple home. I didn't want to drive the staples in too far and tear the foil and I found it easy to get it right after just a couple of minutes.

Nicely balanced, just like a hammer really, with a comfortable, soft handgrip that was big enough even for my mutant-sized hands.

Easy to refill the staples, not unlike how you would do so with an office paper stapler.

It supports several sizes (depth) of staple, it just so happens that I was using 8mm staples which were pretty good in stapling my foil.

No electric lead to get in the way (unlike my electric stapler).

Seems a well-made tool. Solid, metal build, this is not a lightweight DIY tool but something built for tradesmen who will use it often and last for years.

CONS
----
Not exactly a precision instrument.

The Tacwise A11 Hammer Tacker is a handheld tacker that fires out tacks/staples when the hammer end is compressed into a hard surface. As such, the hammer tacker is an absolutely ideal tool for use when tacking down large areas - such as with laying down carpet or the like.

The first thing you notice about the Hammer Tacker when first handling it is its weight. It's quite a weighty and substantial beast; slightly top-heavy to allow for a good strong whack, although not too much so that it becomes uncomfortable after a while to use due to a lack of overall balance.

The grip on the Tack Hammer is also quite hefty and sturdy, clearly designed for regular and quite extensive use without deterioration. And that's one particular aspect about the tool that seems consistent throughout its construction. It's been designed to last. And after using it to put up new roofing felt across the entire length of our attic, I have to say that the hammer tacker proved to be a hard-wearing and reliable tool (as well as darn enjoyable to use).

That said, it does take a little while to get used to if you need your tacks to be reasonably well aimed. For the first couple of beams, every now and again I'd just catch the edge of the post I was tacking onto. No huge hardship (it's in the attic after all), however should your project require a certain degree of precision to where the staples go then this really isn't the tool for you.

Refilling the hammer with staples is an absolute doddle - just unclip and then slide out the end (located by the handle) and load in your staples like you would with a large stapler. The Hammer Tacker takes 6mm, 8mm and 10mm staples - so plenty of choice depending on your project.

Really impressed with this piece of kit. This hammer tacker has a very satisfying heft to it making it easy to bang those staples in. It's well balanced weight though, so it doesn't tire out your hand too much when using it. The handle is comfortable in the hand and the button to release the slot for staples is well positioned so that it doesn't get in the way of your hand. Easy to load, easy to use, easy to get a bit carried away and hammer tack everything in sight.

I was a little concerned when reading other reviews for the Tacwise Hammer Tacker because they gave me the impression that I might require professional tuition to use this tool successfully. As it turns out that couldn't have been further from the truth - on my first ever attempt I managed to staple a loose fitted carpet with no bother at all and without wasting a single staple!

So, no tuition needed, no skill required and best of all, unless you're using it on a job that requires thousands of staples, no strain on your wrist at all. Along with the tacker I received a box of 5000 Tacwise 140/8mm staples which was great as I'd half expected to have to go out and buy staples before I could use the machine.

The only thing that I would say is that, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, you receive no instructions at all with the tacker. Admittedly it is just a heavy duty stapling machine so why the need for an instruction sheet? well, If this is the first time that you have used one of these it is not immediately apparent how you load the staples, what is more, once you have fathomed out where to load them it is very hard to undo the tacker in order to load them - so hard that after ten minutes of pushing and pulling I was sure that I was trying to undo the wrong bit. However, I did eventually work it out and loaded the machine for the first time, and the good news is that subsequent reloading of staples is nowhere near as difficult, in fact it is pretty straightforward.

Robust construction and ease of use combine to make this tool feel like it will continue to perform flawlessly for years to come and so I have no problem in recommending it to anyone who is looking to purchase a Hammer Tacker.
