Book Description

In 2011-12 and 2012-13 Jupp Heynckes’ FC Bayern Munchen played an entertaining and effective football game style that led to both Bundesliga and Champions League titles. Heynckes’ Bayern lost the 2012 Champions League Final in PKs but won in 2013. Winning those titles was based on a game model this book depicts. Utilizing the Tactical Periodization method to implement it is an approach proposed in this book. Tactical Periodization was made popular by Jose Mourinho who has won titles since 2003, his first year as a Head Coach in four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy, Spain) plus a UEFA Cup, two Champions League, and was Champions League semi-finalist three other times…all in 10 years! Tactical Periodization is a methodology a Coach may apply to play game style any and/or formation leveraging this method.

Implementing a game style requires thinking and planning through each game situation. Preparing those game situations through the pre-season and enhancing the team’s effectiveness throughout the season is the focus of the Tactical Periodization method. It integrates the four pillars of the game (physical, mental, technical, and tactical) with the four moments of the game (Offense, Transition to Defense, Defense, and Transition to Offense) over the training week to reach the desired Game Model. The value of this book is not only in the theoretical aspects of the Tactical Periodization (Chapters 1 -3) but the practical context exercises that enable the reader to leverage them for a team’s training plan. In Chapter 4, Bayern’s Game Model for all four moments of the game is detailed with supporting images. Chapters 5 through 9 depict the operationalization of the Game Model through detail the exercises needed for each principle in each moment of the game to train the team.

Enjoy the book and good luck in your endeavors!

Pedro Mendonça

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Read For The Experienced Coach. 21 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There's a lot of talk about Tactical Periodisation in football at the moment & Pedro's book adds some clarity to the subject. Whilst looking at one of Europe's most successful teams (pre-Pep), the book shows how some of the training sessions are structured, on particular days of the week, designed to ensure the players reach match day in top tactical, as well as, top physical condition.
The very literal translation can make the book heavy going in places, which is why I think it is of more use to experienced coaches, but the book is a worthy addition to anyone's coaching library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed Analysis of Bayern Munich's Training Methods 17 Aug. 2014
By Steve Amoia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Tactical Periodization is a football/soccer training methodology created by Professor Vitor Frade in Portugal. It focuses on the operationalization of a specific way of playing through the creation of a Game Model. It is, without a doubt, nowadays the most evolved way of training, used by some of the most famous coaches in the world, e.g. Jose' Mourinho, Andre' Villas-Boas and Vitor Pereira."

--- Pedro Mendonca, author.

Mr. Mendonca has provided coaches, journalists, players and fans with an extremely detailed analysis of Bayern Munich's successful Game Model under their fabled manager, Jupp Heynkes. This book is well-written, extremely detailed and provides a significant educational analysis.

Organized Format

There are nine concisely detailed chapters along with a bibliography and specialized glossary. I believe that a table of contents and/or index would have been helpful; however, this e-book's organization will provide the reader with an adequate reference-checking quality. This is the type of book that you will read and then reference from as you prepare present and future training sessions. For example, 6.3 SubPrinciple - "Keeper with Excellent Feet," which most coaches will recognize as a reference to Manuel Neuer and would serve as a good teaching tool for your goalkeepers.

Writing Style

This work, in my opinion, was written for college level and professional soccer coaches. The author described various training scenarios in good detail to complement his generous use of illustrations to reinforce numerous learning principles. I also liked that the author used several footnotes (at least 18 by my count) which lend a great deal of accuracy and credibility to his research.

Generous Use of Clear and Concise Graphics

The author created 185 illustrated figures of schematic drawings and training exercises. Many of these graphical images used different colors to great effect for clarity and ease of reading. For example, Mr. Mendonca consistently used red circular images with numbers for the offensive phase and yellow ones for the defensive set-up. These schematics are easy-to-read and provide an excellent learning/teaching tool for your coaching staff/playing roster.

A Testament of Excellence to Jupp Heynkes

Although Jupp Heynkes no longer manages Bayern Munich, his Game Model had a profound effect on the club's recent success. Arguably, his influence was also a contributing factor to German dominance of European football in recent years. This book will become a great addition to your coaching library that will enable you to study a specific training regimen from one of the top club's in world football.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Read. Ever. 13 Sept. 2014
By Kai - Published on Amazon.com

Easily the most beneficial soccer book I have ever read. This is for coaches and fans looking to broaden their spectrum of the beautiful game. There are thousands of soccer books out there that go over drills, formations, and tactics.., but this book is all encompassing of those dimensions of the game and then some. If you have a firm grip on coaching (advanced) and want to take it one step further, purchase this book and expand your knowledge of the best sport on the planet. Lastly, I want to thank Pedro and authors like this for all that they do.
