Product Description

Product Description

Most people experience musculoskeletal problems some time during their lifetime. Some people fail to recover and return to work, not so much because of what has happened but because they come up against obstacles. Knowing how to facilitate recovery and when to act is essential for successful management of the problem. This book is about identifying psychosocial obstacles, formulating a plan and taking action to overcome or navigate around them. It enables identification of obstacles across the key areas of the Person, the Workplace and the Context, in order to develop a plan that addresses specific obstacles and also provides a timeline for recovery.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is an employer/manager or a medical/healthcare professional, in fact I would say it is essential reading! It is a fantastic tool that is easy to understand and extremely practical. If enough people read it and follow the guidance we should see the number of people being off work with musculoskeletal problems for extended periods dramatically reduce in the UK, which in turn will improve the lives of thousands of people.

Kendall & Burton have produced a slim and eye-catching new guide for the assessment and management of musculoskeletal problems. Don't be fooled by its size - it is one of the most comprehensive and enlightening contributions ever made on this subject. It is aimed specifically at the key stakeholders: employers, Occupational Health staff and clinicians but many employees and sufferers of pain will also find its content both understandable and illuminating.
Musculoskeletal pain is very common (it affects all of us at some point in time) and will usually have an excellent prognosis, causing only a mild impact on our quality of life and ability to work. However in some cases, such symptoms may become chronic, causing substantial impact in terms of pain, disability and employment. Using the concept of 'flags', the authors explain and identify potential obstacles to recovery, and provide step by step guidance for their identification and management. This little book has the potential to save employers millions!

I agree this book is essential reading for everyone involved in dealing with the impact of musculoskeletal problems in the workplace, but particularly managers, supervisors, human resources, and health & safety advisers, not just healthcare professionals, therapists and rehabilitation providers. It is not so much about what the problem is, but how to do something about it to achieve early recovery, setting out the steps that need to be taken, who needs to take them, and when. It uses a combination of text, graphics and information boxes to present the facts, and includes summary posters and case studies in a user-friendly format suitable for all the key players. Over the last decade we have learned a great deal about musculoskeletal problems- we know a lot of what to do, but we're not always very good at doing it. Hopefully that is about to change with this simple evidence-based guidance, to the benefit of all.
