"Taboos and Issues" is the latest in the series of photocopiable Teachers' Resource Books. It covers many serious issues which are usually, and quite reasonably, considered unsuitable for inclusion in general coursebooks. It provides the opportunity for adults to discuss controversial issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource but proceed with caution! 16 Nov 2004
This is a really great resource and it generates a lot of discussion every time I use it in class. It also has some great language and vocabulary points which my students normally love - a particular favourite is 'Not My Type' where the vocabulary includes 'bad dandruff' and 'a big beer belly'. It can be a little controversial for some students and I would think carefully about whether your students are easily offended before buying it. However, I personally couldn't do without this resource and I take it everywhere I go - it's fantastic for developing speaking skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous teaching resource 11 Dec 2008
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
I currently teach several classes of French students doing their Bac, and this book is absolutely invaluable as a source of lesson topics. It is always a good idea to augment the standard plans herein with current news stories for comparison, but this is still the perfect basis for lessons on a very wide range of subjects. Highly recommended for ELAs!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for adults 3 Feb 2007
My students love talking about anything remotely risque or controversial, and this book covers the lot, from begging to brothels. The worksheets are clearly laid out with a variety of activities. Needless to say, definitely one for more open minded adults, but a great resource to spice up classes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Resource 5 Dec 2006
By Mouldy Pilgrim - Published on Amazon.com
It has been a long time in coming: a book that looks at the more controversial side of life and gets away from the sanitised topics for the prudish teacher and class. It was with great interest that I first picked up this book.

It does get into some pretty good issues, and some that are really on the limits of what you would call "normal". This covers issues like transgenderism, (a personal favourite of mine), age differences, inheritance, death, and a whole range of others. There is pretty much something for everyone, even those with a more conservative bent.

Some of the features are good, but there is one serious lack. That is the presentation. Each lesson is quite simply boring to look at. Compared with other publications in the same vein, (for example, "Ideas and Issues: Advanced"), this book is positively boring to look at. Despite some good features, one will need to spice it up with their own resources. The lack of pictures and creativity in some respects is quite notable. However, they do make it easy to expand on the topics and make your own activities.

It is a good book to form a basis for a lesson, but there is no arriving two minutes before your lesson and copying a few runs from one of these. You will need to add your own "spice" and "flavour" to it.
