Product Description

Product Description

A collection of stories from the Japanese tabloid press covering a wide range of topics, from sports to sex, crime to politics, social issues to scandal. They illustrate the energetic and inquisitive nature of Japan's weeklies, which often cover stories that the mainstream press do not. The best stories from the last four years are published here: a quirky, lurid, irreverent and unique book that will be fascinating for people who are looking for real news of the country. As a picture of contemporary Japanese society, the book is sometimes shocking, always entertaining, and absolutely true. Each chapter is devoted to a single theme (business life, sexual deviance, violence etc.) and the book as a whole offers a vivid picture of an aspect of Japan that is never presented to the world outside...

4.0 out of 5 stars Eyeopeningly Informative, 10 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Tabloid Tokyo: 101 Tales of Sex, Crime and the Bizarre from Japan's Wild Weeklies (Paperback)
For most of us, even those who live in Japan, the writing system is impenetrable, and deprives us of the real stories of crime, scandal and exposure that the Japanese tabloid-style weekly magazines turn out endlessly. Mark Schreiber and his colleagues have done us all a big favour in translating dozens of these funny, sexy, tragic and sometimes downright bizarre articles and give us wonderful snapshots of an unfamiliar world. The Japanese PR machine, which tries so hard to preserve the mystical images of Mt Fuji, cherry blossoms and geisha will be furious at this book. It's not a bad idea to keep a pinch or two of tabloid salt handy but the book shines by its originality and helps us know what's going on in the real Japan.

This book misdirects us towards negatibe impression about Japanese. It is really sensational and base canard gossip. If you have a low taste, you may enjoy this kinds of stupid gossip. This book and MAINICHI newspaper group who has mislead foreingers with these lies for over 6-years are now condemned by many Japanese. MAINICHI expresses apology on their paper officially. >> [...]

This review is from: Tabloid Tokyo: 101 Tales of Sex, Crime and the Bizarre from Japan's Wild Weeklies (Paperback)
The traitorous newspaper "MAINICHI-SHINBUN" prints unture and obscene articles that are recorded in this book so's to make foreigner look down to Japanese.
In Japan, MAINICHI-SINBUN is severely blamed by many citizens and sponsors and there is actions to accuse this company of the defamation of Japanese character.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy/believe this book!, 11 July 2008
By Boon - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tabloid Tokyo: 101 Tales of Sex, Crime and the Bizarre from Japan's Wild Weeklies (Paperback)
This hentai author himself and all related persons who published this book/articles on Mainichi Daily News are accused as being fake, and Mainichi admitted these are corrupted so wildly. Some people started boycotting Mainichi News Paper. This is a big fuss and if you read this and ask about it to Japanese, I am sure most of people get angry.
