Product Description

Tablighi Jamaat, the world's biggest Muslim mission, was founded in India to purge the backslidden of British and Hindu influence. Now it is here in force in the West, bent on building what's been dubbed a 'megamosque' in east London, and preparing the faithful for paradise. Their ethos and purpose divide scholars and puzzle journalists. Author, Dr Zacharias Pieri is a political sociologist with extensive ethnographic research experience of British Muslim communities.

Taught me things I did not know, that are very relevant. People living in the UK should know about this. Short and to the point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tablighi Jamaat made easy 20 Feb 2013
At last - a book about Tablighi Jamaat in the UK that is well researched, accessible, informative and to the point. I've wanted to read up on this group for a while now, especially because of all the stories about them wanting to build a mega-mosque in London and that they are linked to terrorist activities...
The book gives a fascinating insight into the ideologies behind this group, painting them as scripuralist and spiritual, weary of the wider community seeing the west as sinful, but at the same time having to engage with this in order to get their work done. The book also takes a look at their mega-mosque construction project, their links to terrorism and why some Muslims and non Muslims in the wider community oppose them. Importantly, the book makes the point that Islamist movements like Tablighi Jamaat are not stagnent in time, but are rather able to adapt to their local circumstances - we have seen this with Islamist movements all over the world in the past years! Pieri's point is not one to be under estimated - Tablighi Jamaat is learning to play the game and as he puts it, to negotiate the British context, and that engagement could have a transformative effect on the group. Seeing recent newspaper reports that the Tablighis mosque plans have been rejected because they were still not compliant with what the council wanted, I wonder how much they have really changed in their beliefs, but at least its clear that they have changed their strategies. Definitely watch out for this group - its something every one should know more about, and this is an excellent place to start. I look forward to more from the Lapido series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 28 Sep 2012
A really fascinating insight into a group which has been linked to a number of terrorist plots here and abroad and which now has it's sights set on building a "mega mosque" in Newham, east London.
The book helps clarify a number of misrepresentations about the TJ, its structure and its ideals AND offers people - journalists in particular - a series of useful facts, quotes and data on the group which could help them when reporting on the organisation in future.
It's a must-have for any newsroom and I look forward to the next in the series from Lapido Media.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Insight into Tablighi Jamaat 22 Feb 2013
This book gives a very clear insight into Tablighi Jamaat. Being exceptionally well written, this book is very accessible, for those with little or no knowledge of the movement. The author should be highly commended for his excellent publication, and it is obvious throughout this book that it has been excellently researched, and has a very thorough understanding of ideologies behind the movement. As someone who did not know much about Tablighi Jamaat I found the charts and timelines very useful and what wonderful photographs included too!

The first 72 pages are excellent and worthy of 5 stars - lots of facts, information and evidence, and truly outstanding photos.

The book is wrecked - and loses 4 stars - by the all-important Conclusion page (p73) which is fanciful, detached from on-the-ground facts and unwarrantably optimistic about Tablighi Jamaat's claimed conversion (only, please note, in Newham, east London where TJ want to build their mega-mosque) from a fundamentalist socially-hostile and isolationist sect into an open socially-integrated community group.

So I've written an alternative Conclusion as follows:

"This Lapido Media handbook provides a mostly accurate portrayal of Tablighi Jamaat and especially of the background to the group's intention to construct a mega-mosque at West Ham close to the Olympic Park in east London. However regrettably the final Conclusion page is not substantiated by the evidence and is demonstrably distorted over the issue of TJ's claimed metamorphosis into an open, tolerant and socially-engaged community organisation.

"TJ is the most successful missionary movement in global Islam with 80 million adherents worldwide. It is not itself a terrorist organisation although in its homeland of South Asia it is closely associated with violent Islamists such as Harkat-ul-Mujahidin (Sikand 2002) and the Pakistan Taleban (Khan 2006), and a significant number of jihadist plots worldwide have been initiated by TJ adherents. It claims to be non-political. However it was founded in India specifically to assert a strong discrete Islamic identity and to separate and isolate Muslims from the influence of their Hindu neighbours; this social separatism and underlying hostility to non-Muslim society remains firmly embedded in the movement's DNA around the world.
