Even though I have a tablet, I'm not heavy tablet user. Most of my computing tasks at home are in productivity tools that need a keyboard and large display. As a result, most of my tablet use is for watching cat videos, following Twitter on a second screen during live sports events (and the Oscars: great fun!) or other non attention intensive tasks. Until now I've been satisfied with simple stand simple stand that enables rotating a tablet between landscape and portrait views.

For users who use their tablets more extensively, or might have specialized placement needs (perhaps referring to an instructional video or documentation while taking on a DIY project, or engaging in extended video conferencing), the Octa TabletTail Spider Money is an elegant solution. This is also an excellent solution for displaying multimedia to multiple viewers in a conference room or office environment.

In order to understand this product, you'll have to understand its specialize nomenclature:
-the tail is the semi-rigid tubing that forms the base and holds the connector interface for the other part of this device
-the spider is round device that holds gripping "claws" that secure the tablet, and the mounting interface that secures itself to the tail (while allowing 360 degree rotation). The claws are extended via a spring-actuated button, and squeezed to secure the tablet. Once secured, you can freely rotate the tablet, or slide a locking collar on the end of the tail to fix it in place.

The fundamental operation is very intuitive; this is accompanied by a very well-written use guide.

In short, you attach the spider to the tail and the tablet to the spider. You can flex the tail to adjust the height.

Not your standard suction mount but a system that really holds your tablet. Well done.

This thing is awesome! 9 Jan 2014

I love it. It is infinitely positionable, and very easy to use. Originally the instructions seemed a little daunting, but once you have your tablet and the octa in front of you, it all makes sense (I read the instructions without having the tablet present). I use it at my bedside, with the tail tucked between the mattresses, and my iPad just hovers next to my head. I can read my book and fall asleep, no worries! Also, I can tilt the iPad to the exact right angle of viewing (about 30 degrees -- no other stand can achieve that). The only two things of note are: (1) the dock thing and tail are fairly weighty, which is good, they are durable and quality, but lugging them around (bedroom to living room) is ... well ... not a chore, exactly, but definitely more work than just hauling the iPad or my former stand (which was ounces). It's not a con, just something to note. And (2) the seal is definitely hard to break when it's fresh. GIve it a couple hours and you can probably release it with your fingers, but if I have just attached the suction part to the back of the iPad and then want to remove it, I need a tool (fork, knife, credit card, whatever). Also not a con, you actually want the seal to be strong, just something to note.

Last noteworthy thing -- I have two dogs, who sleep in the bed. I leave the octa tucked where it stays. I've found it's a good idea to wipe around the rubber gasket before attaching my iPad, as dog hair sticks to the rubber and prevents a good seal. My iPad did fall off one night (no damage, just landed on the bed), because the seal wasn't good. My fault, lesson learned. So, just a word to the wise.

In any event, I highly recommend this product, it works as advertised!

good but has a few issues 16 May 2014
By Stephen Wilcoxon - Published on Amazon.com

It's a good stand but has a few issues. The vacuum dock requires the Apple symbol on the back to be absolutely airtight but it commonly (occasionally?) is not (it's not on my new iPad Air at least). The other issue is that the swivel angle lock is not as precise as I had hoped (I was hoping you could lock the swivel angle at any point and it would stay there). Due to these issues, I have not used it as much as I expected.

Update: Octa sent me some small clear stickers to fix the issue with the Apple logo not being airtight on some iPad Airs. Once that was corrected and I was able to attach the vacuum dock to the middle of the back of the iPad Air, the swivel angle issue fixed itself - without the angular weight of the off-center iPad, the angular swivel stays where I want even if I don't lock it.

Fantastic piece of kit and great customer service 8 Aug 2013
By Malcolm Woollard - Published on Amazon.com
The 'monkey tail' and the vacuum dock complete the iPad, making it comfortable to use anywhere and indeed increasing its utility. Once you've attached it to your tablet and had the opportunity to try it in a number of positions for a range of activities you won't want to take it off, and will wonder how you ever did without it.

I had a slight problem with a leaking vacuum dock and contaacted Octa, who replied the next day. They immediatelt told me that they would ship a replacement dock at no cost to me, and it arrived within a couple of days. The prson who contacted me was always helpful and polite, making a considerable change from most internet companies.

Both the product and the company that sells it are highly recommended.

Amazing product from Amazing People 10 Aug 2013
By Alicia B. - Published on Amazon.com
Out of the box this product is intuitive and easy for me to use. I was a little worried about the amount of force it would take to twist or adjust the monkey tail, but it was incredibly easy. I love using my iPad, but due to my illness it can be painful to hold it. I have used other stands, but I have not ever found one that is completely hands free. THIS ONE IS!
As if this product was not amazing enough their customer service is exemplary! I was mistakenly shipped the wrong vacuum dock colour and called to let them know. Ash who handles customer service was not only friendly but fixed my problem with ease! It has honestly been a pleasure purchasing from Octa and they can be certain that this wont be the last time! Thank you for a great product that serves my needs!

Works with other tablets (with some tweaking) 7 May 2013
By Kevin F. Kratzke - Published on Amazon.com
I acquired the Monkey Kit through their Kickstarter campaign, and have been happily using it with my Nexus 10 since I received it. As stated on their website, the Vacuum Dock does not work with the Nexus 10. After contacting them to verify that it was the textured back that prevented the dock from forming a seal, I applied a transparent skin to the back of my tablet. Once I allowed the skin to dry completely (24 hours), the dock is now forming a secure seal.

Using the Monkey Tail, it is possible to position the tablet in a much more ergonomic position. It can take some tweaking to get it to stay in the position you want, but it holds well once it's in place. As they mention, you should check the Vacuum Dock every once in a while, and give it an extra pump if the button has started to protrude. I have only had to add one to two pumps over many hours of use.

The only cons I can think of are the price (I would contend that it's worth it), and the weight. If you like to keep your kit as light and portable as possible, then the Monkey Kit will probably be too heavy and bulky for you to want to travel with regularly. That being said, if it weighed less, it wouldn't be nearly as effective or feel as well-built.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Monkey Kit to anyone who finds themselves wanting a more comfortable tablet experience.
