Product Description

TVonics launches first retail Set Top Box to meet new Government requirements. With the digital switchover taking place across the UK until 2012 it is imperative that you have access to products and services you can trust. The TVonics MDR-240 meets all the new 'core receiver requirements' and is designed to last the life of the TV it converts. It won't get overloaded with information it can't process and will retune when necessary, meaning that the MDR-240 responds to broadcast information that tell it that a retune is needed. This means that you will automatically be prompted to retune your box when required, so you don't have to worry that your TV viewing will be interrupted.

As one who was a novice with regard to the ending of analogue and the transfer to digital, I bought this kit on the recommendation of a Which? review and found it easy to set up, so bought a second one for another television. Both have continued to function satisfactorily. The accompanying leaflet and booklet have proved to be accurate and useful, and written in language easy to follow. Well worth the money.

Purchased for the Audio Description (AD) function, which works well. Good price for a compact STB. So good I bought two.

A very compact unit, so takes up little space, and being black it blends in unobtrusively with all the other black TV and audio boxes. Very simple to set up and get working. The only difficulty we had was down to not having a manual for the TV. We were installing this for an elderly relative, and the chunky remote control has buttons and labelling that are compatible with elderly eyes and fingers.
The MDR-240 comes complete with everything you need to be up and running - i.e. SCART lead and RF coaxial cable, so I'd be surprised if the whole job took you more than half an hour or so to get up and working.

I plugged everything in, switched it one, pressed OK on the remote, and 30 seconds later all the stations were tuned in.

It gives a much better picture than the old analog. So I am pleased (if somewhat peeved that so many TV's around the house now don't work without my buying a new box for each of them!)

Faced with the option of throwing away a perfectly usable Samung LCD TV, albeit without digital capability and buying a new set, or simply buying a relatively cheap Freeview digibox, I settled on the cheaper option.

I read several reviews, both on Amazon and other websites and settled on a TVonics MDR-240. It was easy to set up, came with the necessary cables, and has, so far, done exactly what it was bought to do.

Time will tell whether it proves to be reliable, but I am currently very happy with it and for the cost against the price of a new TV, it's a bargain!!!

If you've got the odd TV around the house that isn't Freeview'd up, your options are getting more limited by the day. I did a lot of searching to find a Freeview STB that would work well, reliably and that had a good electronic programme guide. I've had some terrible Philips and Grundig ones in the past so was a bit wary about the whole thing. When I saw repeated recommendations for this TVonics box I was pretty sceptical given that it was a brand I'd never heard of. Needn't have worried - this small unit does an excellent job. The EPG is great, the remote (though hideously ugly and the size of a skateboard) is comprehensive and the unit looks neat. The company also include loads of leads in the box, including a SCART, which felt like a generous and useful move. Nice one.

I followed the simple instructions connected the unit to the TV, plugged it in and watched it spend a few minutes setting itself up. All went well and I watched a few hours TV that night, I watched one hour the following night but on the third night the reception had been lost on most of the programmes and then it simply froze... I parcelled it back up for a no-quibble refund, it must have been an unlucky Friday build - Amazon were excellent as usual
