I bought this from Comet in November 2010.

Since I first purchased this there has been a problem with the DVR freezing the programme several times when I use it in the morning. I resolved this by switching it off at the mains and allowing it to start again. At the time I was unable to find the receipt to return it to Comet.

In recent weeks this had become more frequent and was also happening when programmes were being recorded so that there was a gap of approx 2 minutes in recordings. Three days ago it started freezing if I tried to use instant record or to access EPG whilst watching the programme. Yesterday this happened many times in the first hour whilst I was watching BBC breakfast. During the night whilst on standby it had kept attempting to restart.

Everytime it froze I switched it off at the mains. It would not allow me to switch off using the remote. After this had happened several times I was given a message that the Hard Drive Initialisation had failed and that I could no longer record or playback. I was still allowed to watch programmes using EPG. I left it switched off at the mains all day. When I switched it on in the evening I could play programmes but still got the message re Hard drive initialisation If I tried to record anything or access the Library.

I left it switched off at the mains all night. It started without any problems this morning and did not freeze. When I got up I switched the TV off and left the DVR alone. I have just switched it on to access the message wording, so that I could complain to TVONICS ,I pressed the LIB button to access the default message but it had disappeared,and the library returned indicating that a programme had been recorded at 9-15 am.

I read the first reviews on these and was really worried that I'd bought a duff product. How wrong was I!!!!!!!!! This is a great product, it works reliably and effortlessly. I can even record all of my favourite programmes at the touch of a button.
What surprised me when it arrived was the quality of the box, it's not like my last freeview box, it's build from solid metal, built to last. I also like the fact that it's made in the UK. Not many seem to be anymore.

Not long after I bought it, I also bought a wifi dongle from the company's website ([...]) and I now have iPlayer on my TV. This is brilliant! I didn't know at the time, but a fantastic feature.

It was easy to install, took me two minutes, and it just works. One other great thing about it is the HDMI ports on the back. I can loop my sons PS3 through the box which means I'm no longer pulling different wires at the back of my TV after my son has finished playing his games.

The other really nice thing about this is the clock on the front. Reminds me of the good old days, my old faithful VHS.

Would certainly recommend. My best mate has just bought one too, and cancelled her sky subscription.

I bought this box a couple of months ago and i had some problems but once i installed the new software from tvonics website. Its worked perfectly, i also got some cool new stuff. I really like the new colour menus. Defiantly recommend the only problem i have now is not having enough time to watch everything I've recorded.

The TVonics is a very good PVR. I have Topfield 5810 connected to the same TV and nearly always use the Tvonics unit. The Tvonics recording quality is very good but above all else, it responds very quickly to the remote control commands. It is so annoying when the Topfield doesn't respond. I like the new EPGs and being able to use the BBC iPlayer is a bonus. The software is so easy to install via the USB port, but you need a buy a very cheap wireless dongle from Tvonics to make it work.

The Topfield PVR is let down by a remote which is frustratingly unresponsive (as mentioned in the Gadget show reviews,)but it is ultimately the more capable PVR if you install the 'MyStuff' app. THe latter is very good and sophisticated if a little unreliable as I have had to reinstall it several times.

Overall I prefer the Tvonics unit as it does what any PVR should do quickly and without fuss. Things I would like to see on the unit are;
i. Manual padding of timer start. Occasionally I might miss the first minute of the programme.
ii. It would be nice to be able to archive programmes like the Topfield can (and which my old and sold Humax 9200 unit definitely couldn't contrary to the manufacturer's claims).

Prior to buying this, I did loads of research, trawling through review sites and eventually this appeared to be about the best and easiest to use. All pvrs seem to have some problems/ quirks/ bugs and negative reviews, so one needs to bear that in mind when coming to a conclusion.
I plugged this in and started to get used to it, but it kept on locking up and freezing. I checked the firmware version and it was about 18 months old. On the TVonics website I found major updates, which would surely fix the bugs. I downloaded them, popped them on a USB stick and off I went - because my firmware was so old, they were a 2 part install. 1st part went fine, next and final update took ages, when it finally rebooted, it never came back on again!! Powered off and on, nothing, fan comes on and thats it. No picture just dead. So back it went for a refund. Guess it will have to be the slightly more complex Humax.
