I have some way to go before I can say that I know it inside-out but there is one important point that that should be made clear for prospective buyers:
There is definitely NO WiFi interface in this device. The stick-on label on the box cleverly states "WIFI n 802.11n" then, underneath "optional" in small print. The manual infers that there are variants with it built-in but doesn't state any part numbers. It also states that there is a list of compatible external WIFI devices on the TViX website. I couldn't find such a list after considerable searching.
I tried using a Linksys WUSB54G USB WIFI dongle. It didn't work.
More searching of the TViX website. Found the document "Using the Wireless Network" which lists the Linksys WUSB54GC and a D-Link device. It states that the "TViX 2200 or 3300 series don't support those modules" but doesn't exclude the Slim S1 Duo. I therefore paid nearly £18 for a Linksys WUSB54GC from Amazon - It doesn't work!
The Slim S1 Duo doesn't appear to have a numeric designation like their other boxes although the downloaded firmware update does have "tvix_6600" in its file name.
I updated the firmware to their latest version 2.1.0 in the hope that it might provide more wi-fi compatibility - but it didn't.
This is really bad - More searching:
I can see the Realtek WL-6203C being offered as compatible on an Australian forum. (Links apparently not allowed in these reviews)
I can see that someone from TViX is recommending Airlive WN-200USB.
My conclusion is that maybe the only way to be sure of getting a compatible WIFI interface is to buy the one that they offer on the TVX website, the TW-7711U costing $51 which is currently UNAVAILABLE in TVXmall. It appears to use the RT3070 chipset so I found a device on eBay that uses the RT3070. That eventually arrived and now I have a Wifi connection.
Going on from that I have found a few more issues:
1) I set up a sequence of recording four separate programmes on one evening without any time lap between them. While it was recording the fourth one I stopped the recoding manually. That messed-up the previous two by merging the first minute of one on to the second one. They were therefore un-watchable.
Manual recording seems fine.
2) Network services; the uPnP connection to my NAS box works OK. I can watch videos that exist on the NAS box.
The device also offers FTP connections. I can make an FTP connection from my computer (password and user name are accepted) and see an empty folder that exists on the device. If I try to upload any files to the device it refuses access. The device's FTP setup only enables setting of the password. There appears to be nowhere to define access rights to folders. The pdf on the CD that is provided only mentions FTP in two places both in connection with setting the password.
Samba connection: This is that flaky old windoze networking method of connection, probably the least reliable of network protocols so I wouldn't expect miracles. In setting up a Network Disk I can find my NAS box from the device and drill down to the folders on it. But when I try to use any network source of files the device just waits indefinitely with a circulating arrow and no response to the remote. After at least 30 minutes it is still doing it and the only way out is to hit the on/off button.
NTP connection: I haven't tried it yet. My NAS box doesn't provide NTP.
3) The printing on the remote is very faint and looks like it will soon wear away.
4) The CD provides a program called Netshare. It will only install on windoze and doesn't appear to do much because of the hang when trying to browse network folders.
General: The software is not finished and the documentation is very poor. Having said that I have used it on several occasions as a simple recorder. It is just that the more complex functions seem to need finishing off.
