Biography

We Are Scientists shocked themselves and impressed many others with their 2005 debut With Love & Squalor, which sold over 150,000 copies in the UK on the strength of dancefloor standbys Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt; It's A Hit; and The Great Escape, as well as nine other songs that, to all appearances, people also liked. Twenty months of near-constant touring culminated in a sold out ... Read more in Amazon's We Are Scientists Store

We Are Scientists are back, this time with their fourth studio album and self professed “finest work to date”, TV En Francais. Recorded in New York and produced by Chris Coady, with drums provided by long term collaborator Andy Burrows of Razorlight fame; TV En Francais is the first album offering from the band since Barbara back in 2010.

The reasoning behind the album’s name isn’t necessarily obvious, but that’s the point. Having seen the phrase on the side of a motel in Miami and deciding it was “a cool metaphor” for missing out on the essence of the meaning; the theme of failure and misunderstanding runs throughout.

After kicking off with the rather unassuming "What You Do Best", "Dumb Luck" picks up the pace and adds a bit of cheeky spark, gaining momentum only to drop you down again. Note, don’t watch the video for this track if you’re at all squeamish! On a first listen you may find yourself singing along to "Make It Easy", despite not knowing any of the words. It’s a catchy little number. The award for best song title however easily goes to "Sprinkles", with its vintage We Are Scientists sound and accessible “oohs”. Everyone loves an “ooh”, evidenced by the success of Bastille’s number one album last year. Elsewhere “Courage” ticks along gently, with “Overreacting” nudging you back thanks to another ridiculously catchy hook. The breaks are slammed on again for “Return the Favor”, but it’s worth the wait through “Slow Down” to arrive at the sentimental loveliness of as close to a ballad as you’re going to get: “Don’t Blow It”. It could have ended nicely there, but the somewhat lacklustre “Take an Arrow” rounds off the ten track offering.

As sung on one of the key tracks, “if it’s not worth doing right let’s not do it at all.

Great album, the Vinyl was heavyweight however it unfortunately came in BLACK and had a mark on it. Be careful if you think this is the pink version as it is not. The album also comes with a CD in a cardboard sleeve for free.

Good album from We Are Scientists, with some great songs (Make it Easy, Dumb Luck, Return the Favor, Don't Blow It...).
One to listen before going to see them live, where they really shine.
