Biography

Belleruche are perfectly described as handmade hip hop blues soul, like Sarah Vaughan, Django Reinhardt and Cut Chemist stuck in a lift with Russian beer and a sampler.

Belleruche’s distinctive sound is a self-styled brand of handmade hip hop blues soul: think Sarah Vaughan, Django Reinhardt and Cut Chemist stuck in a lift with Russian beer and a sampler.

Product Description

BBC Review

A union between vocalist Kathrin deBoer, guitarist Ricky Fabulous (not the name on his birth certificate, I'll wager) and DJ Modest (ditto, at a guess), Belleruche's debut album - a product of 'late nights, broken leads, strange ideas and old records' - does a pretty good job of evoking the pleasure of the first wave of what was then quaintly referred to as trip hop, but without the paranoia. Under their own subgenre of 'handmade hip hop blues soul', the best thing about the music here is that these are living and breathing songs not just studio confections.

Turntable Soul Music works well when it is at its most minimal - the ballads, 'Balance' and '13:6:35' are lovely things, showcasing deBoer's voice (which, evidently 'carries the soul of the wind off the cape mixed with the grit of illegal Polynesian rum bars') at its least mannered. Fabulous' guitar on 'Alice' has a lovely fuzz-drenched muzziness to it; the sixties beat-meets-noughties beats of 'Bought and Sold' is both clever and danceable. Not so great is 'Minor Swing' which overdoes a swing band loop - it's all a bit Mr Scruff from an age ago.

At best, Turntable Soul Music calls to mind the makers' objective - swooning blues for the later evening. At worst, it recalls a half empty tent on a Saturday afternoon at an anonymous festival. File under 'curious'. --Daryl Easlea

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Belleruche 19 July 2007
Format:Audio CD
Pure class. First heard these guys on Radio Nova, French radio station which champions great alternative music. Wanted to go to the album launch in London two weeks ago but was sold out, tells you something. From first track to last, this CD is quality. Amazing soulful and sultry voice of female lead singer, similar to lead singer of Portishead. Music is generally upbeat, favourite track is Minor Swing, excellent. Turntablism is the genre, Belleruche is the word. Expect big things from these kids, they are the definition of cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breathing new(ish) life into t**p-h*p 8 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
If you took Portishead, Mr. Scruff, Roisin Murphy, the Cinematic Orchestra and maybe a quarter each of Sia, Helicopter Girl and Erykah Badu, chopped them into little bits, put the bits into a bag and pulled them out one by one until you had enough to make a new band with, one of the possible random combinations would be Belleruche. Which is no bad thing, because if their music isn't exactly groundbreaking it certainly is well-crafted, engaging, intelligent and listenable. Not every track is quite as memorable as it should be but every debut is allowed its flaws and these don't stand in the way of some excellent and characterful music. At their best Belleruche ably stand comparison with any of the artists listed above and I'll be keenly watching to see what they do next.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, innovative and very catchy 9 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
Bought this for the Northern Girls track and had to listen to the rest of the album 3 or 4 times before some of the tracks "clicked" but then they did, and I honestly rate this as one of the best albums I've bought in the last few years. Some excellent, innovative and interesting tracks, really great changes in rythmns. Stunning vocals together with clever arrangements. Some really haunting melodies which I found myself humming ! The period production effects on one track are intentional and work for me. Have now bought The Express and found this equally good. Now a fan !

1.0 out of 5 stars Belleruche - Turntable Soul Music
I bought this CD in good faith and wish I hadn't. Poor quality sound and continual hissing. I would advise anyone not to buy it!

Bought this after reading the reviews here. Really disapointed with it. First track is ok and then it's downhill from there!

I think the title sums up my thoughts on this album. Some of the songs are fantastic but some sound really poorly produced and mixed that it sounds like a demo from a local... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty dull, couple of ok tracks.
Sorry, but this album is pretty lame I'm afraid. There are a couple of half-decent tracks on it and it would probably be ok if it wasn't for loads of better stuff out there. Read more
