Product Description

Product Description

On D-Day Trooper Ronald Henderson was one of the first allied soldiers to land on Sword Beach in his Sherman DD swimming tank to provide artillery support on the beach for the infantry that followed shortly afterwards. He had been conscripted into the British Army in 1942 and subsequently joined the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) as a tank driver. After D-Day he fought through the whole of the Northern European campaign and was part of the occupying forces in Germany until his demobilisation in 1947. This book recounts his memories from early childhood until leaving the army for civilian life.

This is an excellent book, it follows Ron Henderson's journey through the war, starting with the spit and polish of barracks life to the carnage of D-Day, and onwards across Europe to Berlin.
The nuts and bolts of living in and operating a tank are well explained, as is the historical overview of each seperate battle and operation. I can thoroughly recommend this book.

From 1942 to 1947 the author takes the reader into parts of history rarely read. I can relate to some of it because I was in the second tanks, in armoured cars, mabout

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been good 3 Jan 2014

I started to read this book due to the involvement of a particular trooper and his story. However, references to him are few and far between and the book is, more or less, a history lesson. One which most ex servicemen will be very familiar with. It could have been a very good book had it stuck to the story of the trooper's involvement in the war.
