Documenting a year in the life of a genuine Internet-age pioneer, this was my summer holiday reading for 2008.
Ben Keene took a fantastic pitch of "5000 people. 1 unique tribe. 1 Fijian island. A tribe is wanted!" and made it more-or-less a reality. This is his story.
The author leased the island of Vorovoro, and launched an online community, where by joining and paying a fee, members of the "online tribe" could spend a week on the physical island helping the residents develop their island in tune with the island's traditions and culture. Every week different members would arrive with differing skills, while online a democratic process of votes among members across the globe would influence that development, always keeping the core values of being eco-friendly and in-keeping with local traditions.
In his way during the year are major financial problems, a vindictive blogger who spreads suspicion online about the project possibly being a scam, a political coup in Fiji, and a major fire on Vorovoro. Oh, and the there's a cyclone! And all the time, different personalities come and go, logistical problems are aplenty, and online voting politics to hurdle.
While the book could have benefited from a proof-reader on occasion - more than once there are small words missing from sentences that spoil the flow of the narrative - it is nonetheless a fascinating first person account of a business and real-life adventure. The project was filmed for the BBC under the title "Paradise or Bust", but the book gives far more background and anecdote than could be covered on screen, and it is all the better for it.
If you doubt whether a website could be socially relevant to the real world, this book offers an account of how it can and was brought about. Tribe Wanted is so much more than just eco-tourism, and indeed the project is still going strong today, and can be followed on their website, their accounts on YouTube and Flickr, and on their Facebook group.
Overall, this is an inspiring page turner and highly recommended or anyone looking for that book that is just a little bit different from the rest.
