Region 2 import, plays in English without subtitles. Young Jim Hawkins, while running the Benbow Inn with his mother, meets Captain Billy Bones, who dies at the inn while it is beseiged by buccaneers led by Blind Pew. Jim and his mother fight off the attackers and discover Billy Bones' treasure map for which the buccaneers had come. Jim agrees to sail on the S.S. Espaniola with Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey to find the treasure on a mysterious isiand. Upon arriving at the island, ship's cook and scaliwag Long John Silver leads a mutiny of crew members who want the treasure for themselves. Jim helps the Squire and Espaniola officers to survive the mutiny and fight back against Silver's men, who have taken over the Espaniola.

The perfect gift for all history buffs is THE ROMA VICTRIX WINE BEAKERCalix Imperium, Roma Victrix Pewter wine beaker
To my mind this is the best rendition of Treasure Island to date. This version of the story is noted for its faithfulness to the book, with much of the dialogue coming directly from it, as well as recreating several of the more violent scenes directly from the book. It was filmed in 1989 on location in Cornwall, England, Jamaica, and also at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

The replica ship Bounty II was used as the fictional Hispaniola on film. It was originally constructed for the film "Mutiny on The Bounty", and was set to be destroyed at the end of filming, however Marlon Brando protested and the ship was saved. It sank off the coast of the Carolinas during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.

All in all this is a superb classic, with an all star cast, Heston's character Long John is most convincing, a cold, crafty, cunning rogue, by turns charming and deadly, but never to be underestimated. Christian Bale as young Jim Hawkins carries his part well, as do all the supporting cast, with high production values, wonderful cinematography and an incredible music score written by Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains, make this a must see.
Highly recommended.

At last to be had on DVD, this is by a long sea mile the best
screen version of Robert L. Stevenson's iconic tale of pirate
treasure. The principal credit for that must go to screenwriter,
producer and director, Fraser Heston. It is no surprise to learn
from his commentary that he grew up with the book, first read to
him in childhood by his father. Anyone hoping to film this story
effectively must properly cast the three key figures - Jim Hawkins,
John Silver, and the Hispaniola. In this 1990 made for Turner
Television version, Christian Bale was ideal for the adventurous
young Hawkins, Charlton Heston imbued Silver with a potent mixture
of rough-hewn charm and cold-blooded determination, and the
former Bounty was redressed to become the square-rigged
schooner that carries them both to the fateful island. Add a fine
British supporting cast, a picturesque Jamaican location and
some truly atmospheric theme music by Paddy Maloney and the
Chieftans and you have the book brought to life.

This is hard-to-find version of a classic story, of which several film versions have been made.
Delivery from Spain was very prompt; although the cover and wording is in Spanish, the film itself played in English without subtitles or any need for language selection.
Quite expensive, but worth it.

Without doubt this is the best version of Treasure Island, bar none! We have waited for a long time for a Region 2 version to appear. This is a Spanish edition but the dialogue is in English with subtitles available in both English and Spanish if required. I have had a VHS tape (copied onto DVD) for many years but the inherent, inferior, VHS quality was still visible. Now, however, we have a genuine high quality DVD that does full justice to this fine film. Charlton Heston is superb as Long John Silver and the young Christian Bale is excellent as Jim Hawkins, while the rest of the British cast of well known actors is first class.

Only recently did this excellent film make it onto DVD. Despite being filmed at least 8 times since the 1920s including the 2012 TV mini series this remains the definitive, and far and away the most entertaining version of RL Stevenson's adventure classic. What makes it great are the great actors: Oliver Reed as the Captain, the frightening Christopher Lee as Black Pew, and Charlton Heston in an uncharacteristic, perfectly played villainous role as Long John Silver; filmed in gritty, realistic locations backed up with a beautiful score by The Chieftains, it's a winner all the way round. Written and directed by Heston's son Fraser, this is one for the ages. Highly recommended for holiday viewing.

Can only endorse what previous reviewers have written. Brilliant version of this great classic. Charlton Heston the best Long John Silver ever! Christian Bale just right as young Jim Hawkins. I have been after this DVD for ages - really pleased it is now available in English, even though the sleeve is in Spanish!. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a true interpretation of the original book, well acted and directed for the screen..
