Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The TL-WN821N Wireless N USB Adapter complies with IEEE 802.11n (Draft 2.0), IEEE 802.11g, and IEEE 802.11b standards. Wireless transmission rates can reach up to 300Mbps. The adapter employs MIMO technology and has internal Intelligent Antennas providing even better wireless performance, transmission rates, stability and coverage. At the same time, CCA technology automatically avoids channel conflicts using its channel selection feature. This product supports 64/128/152-bit WEP encryptions, as well as WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryptions and mechanisms in addition to the adapter's QSS (Quick Secure Setup) feature, allowing users to quickly and easily setup wireless security. This product can also simultaneously operate bandwidth intensive applications such as voice, and video. Applications using a lot of bandwidth that are sensitive to interruptions such as voice and video applications are given priority in order to assure quality. It also works well with other 11g and 11n protocol wireless products.

I have bought this item in order to use it with Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player. The WD's site says it will work with TP-Link TL-WN821N Ver.2.2, and Amazon is selling Ver.3.0 which does not work with the WD box. Just wanted to share this information with others, as I could not find the version information anywhere on Amazon and assumed that there were not so many versions. Wrong.

Now I have this - otherwise perfectly working and quickly delivered - adapter which does not serve my needs. Apparently, I will finally discover how to return purchases...

When the TL-WN821N was plugged in to an Ubuntu machine there was no response at all. Tried NDIS Wrapper, only the XP driver worked, but even that complained about invalid security (for WPA2-Personal). Still couldn't connect at all.

Seemed to work ok on XPsp3.

Researched and discovered that some manufacturers change chipsets but not packaging and model number. Seems that's what happened here, when considering earlier reviews.

Version 3.1

Sticking with a Belkin 54g for now, the signal strength was better anyway.

Bought this because it was a good price and was reported to work well with linux. I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) and the USB adaptor simply plugged in and worked, with no hassle. Signal strength is good, and even though it's an N300 adaptor connecting to an old 54G router, it's connection is stronger than other USB adaptors I have. Would recommend for a cheap way to connect linux boxes to an existing wireless network.
