Product Description

What This Product Does

The TP-LINK Wireless N Access Point TL-WA801ND is designed to establish or expand a scalable high-speed wireless N network or to connect multiple Ethernet enabled devices such as game consoles, digital media adapters, printers, or network attached storage devices to a wireless network. The APs support a host of different functions that makes your wireless networking experience more flexible than ever before. Now, you can enjoy a better Internet experience when downloading, gaming, video streaming or with any other application that you may wish to use.

Highlights
  • 300Mbps wireless speed ideal for smooth HD video, voice streaming and online gaming
  • Supports multiple operation modes: Access Point, Multi-SSID, Client, Universal/WDS Repeater, Bridge with AP
  • Easily setup a WPA encrypted secure connection at a push of the WPS button
  • Up to 30 meters (100 feet) of flexible deployment with included Passive Power over Ethernet Injector
Wireless N - Speed and Range

Adopting IEEE 802.11n advanced MIMO (Multi Input Multi Output) technology, it simultaneously works through two antennas to Tx and Rx to overcome the interference and signal degradation when traveling long distances or through physical barriers in a small office or a large apartment, resulting in an incredible improvement in the wireless performance, even in a steel-and-concrete building. Above all, you could easily pick up the wireless network during long-distance connection where legacy 11g products may not.

Multiple Operating Modes - Easy to Build WLAN

Supports multiple operation modes (Access Point, Multi-SSID, Client, Universal/ WDS Repeater, Bridge with AP) to enable various wireless applications to give users a more dynamic and comprehensive experience when using their AP. Multiple operating mode also helps you easily to build wireless network for hard-to-wire locations or eliminating wireless dead zone.

WPS Button - One Button Setup Security

The TL-WA801ND features Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) that allows users to almost instantly setup their security simply by pressing the "WPS" button automatically establishing a WPA2 secure connection, which is more security compared with WEP encryptions. Not only is this faster than normal security setups but more convenient in that you don’t need to remember a password.

Passive PoE Supported- More Flexible Deployment

The TL-WA801ND is able to be powered using an Ethernet cable to simultaneously send data and electricity to wherever your AP may be located even up to 100 feet away. This feature multiplies your options allowing you to place the AP in a position that is most convenient to get the best signal possible, such as on the wall or on the ceiling of your office.

WPA / WPA2 Encryptions - Advanced Security

As for the security of WI-FI connection, WEP encryption has been no longer the strongest and safest guards for outside threats. TL-WA801ND provides WPA/WPA2 encryptions (Both Personal and Enterprises) that are created by the WI-FI Alliance industry group, promoting interpretabilities and security for WLAN.

Easy to Use

The device comes with a built-in Quick Setup Wizard on the management software. With a simple and user-friendly interface, it leads all Windows, Mac and Linux users through the setup process step-by-step, and even helps with wireless network settings and security configurations, which is convenient to the users, especially for novice users.

I have an Asus O!Play HD2 media player connected to a TV in a room to which I couldn't easily run a Cat5 cable. The O!Play doesn't have WiFi support built-in, so in order to be able to stream movies from my NAS, I needed a way to convert the Cat5 cable port in the device to a wireless link.

My main wireless router is a BT Home Hub running software version 4.7.5.1.83 (Type B), and what I needed was a device which could act as a network client to the Home Hub and then connect to the O!Play using a standard Cat5 cable.

After a little research, I realised that the TL-WA701ND should be able to perform this function. It has several modes of wireless operation:

Access Point - acting as a simple wireless hub to connect together multiple wireless devices.
Multi-SSID - allowing the device to advertise multiple SSIDs and create up top 4 VLANs.
Client - (the option I chose) this effectively allows it to link the local Cat5 port with a remote wireless hub or router.
Repeater - the device (with WDS enabled) will repeat all packets with an associated root wireless hub or router. This effectively extends the range of your wireless network.
Universal Repeater - the device (with WDS disabled) will again repeat all packets and grow the size of the wireless network.
Bridge - allows the device to act as a bridge with up to 4 similar devices to connect different wired LANs wirelessly.

I was amazed as how configurable it is, and how clear the built in help files are. This is not in broken Google translated English either. It's extremely well worded. The menu system is a breeze to navigate, too.

If you need to build a relatively small but very flexible WiFi network, this device is a fantastic choice.

I bought this as a bit of a punt since I know nothing of the brand, but standalone 802.11n APs seem to be a dying breed unless you like spending great wodges of cash on a professional grade model.

Unlike the previous two reviewers, mine did come with a UK plug - although an adapter is peanuts if you get one with a European plug.

Pros: it seems to work well as a replacement for my previous (failed) Edimax unit. Easy to set up, stronger signal than either Edimax or Netgear units. Power over Ethernet injector, which is a real plus if you're going to locate this in an attic or similar. Multiple SSID and VLAN support.

Cons: none, really. Setup was easy, with the only fly in the ointment being the need to set a static IP address on your configuration PC because the on-board DHCP server is disabled in the AP.

I probably had it up and running within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box. I only had to look at the manual to find out its IP address.

    EDIT

Okay, after 18+ months, I've been moved to update this review. It's an appallingly unreliable bit of kit, sadly, and I've never been able to find out why. It's not throughput related, since it will die by simply having a couple of mobile 'phones poll email and Facebook through it, yet survive an 8Gb copy. It will sometimes run for a month - and yet I've had to reboot it seven times today (including while posting this...), and that's after several times yesterday.

If you search on the internet at reviews like this, you'll see a very polarised world: some folks love it (like many here), some have the same stability issues as the one-star reviews here. You find folks pleading for aftermarket firmware like DD-WRT (OpenWRT is only recently supported, but it *is* now supported).

Very good device with nice and stable WiFi that easily covers whole building. In past I had to use two APs, but now one is enough. There is also nice surprise, which Amazon fails to mention: devices is Power-over-Ethernet and comes with power injector. That makes installation possible in nearly any place and there is no need for power socket to be near. All you need to connect is one network cable and then you put power supply and injector near the switch on other side of network cable.

I spent a good couple of hours trying to work out if this could be used as a network bridge as I wanted to wirelessly connect my Blu-Ray and Humax Freesat HD box.

Having read the reviews on this and also the 54Mbps version, I was none the wiser. I then looked at the TP-Link web site and downloaded the data sheets and after some considerable eye-strain, concluded that you probably could do it.

This is in fact quite a versatile bit of kit and to cut a long story short, you can have this in five or six different modes. If you just want it to connect sat/tv/blu-ray, then select it in client mode. Have a play with the WDS settings depending on your access point. The default address for this is 192.168.1.254. That's the same as my Access Point, but you can change it under your LAN settings. I went with 192.168.1.1, but make sure you gateway is set to the same.

Also, it only has one network socket out, so if you want to connect more than one wired device, you'll need a network switch which you can pick up for under a tenner on Amazon.

I will play around with this as I read that someone had it working as a repeater as well, so they boosted the wireless signal as well as bridging the network.

Anyhow, just watched 3 hours of iPlayer on the Foxsat flicker free, so am a happy bunny. Post an questions in comments and I'll try and get back t you asap.
