What This Product Does

The TP-LINK Wireless N Access Point TL-WA701ND is designed to establish or expand a scalable high-speed wireless N network or to connect multiple Ethernet enabled devices such as game consoles, digital media adapters, printers, or network attached storage devices to a wireless network. It is designed using Align 1-stream technology to provide high-speed, unrivaled wireless performance for your network at 150 Mbps. The APs support a host of different functions that makes your wireless networking experience more flexible than ever before. Now, you can enjoy a better Internet experience when downloading, gaming, video streaming or with any other application that you may wish to use.

150Mbps
Router

Wireless N -- Speed and Range

Complying with the IEEE 802.11n standard, TL-WA701ND can easily establish a wireless network and get up to 9X the speed and 4X the range of conventional 11g products. With Align technology based on the IEEE 802.11n 1-stream specification shows improved performance over the existing 802.11g technology, TL-WA701ND delivers performance enhancements, allowing you to have a more joyful surfing experience, including sharing files and watching streaming media.

CCA

CCA Technology -- Stable Wireless Signals

Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) automatically avoids channel conflicts using its clear channel selection feature and fully realises the advantages of channel binding, greatly enhancing the wireless performance. Using channel detection, CCA ensures that only free channels may be bound with, in order to maintain a neighborly atmosphere. Also, this channel detection can detect in real time whether a channel becomes free at which point you can change to that channel in order to multiply your data transmission rates.

Multiple modes

Multiple Operating Modes -- Easy to Build WLAN

Supports AP Client, Bridge, Repeater and AP operation modes to enable various wireless applications to give users a more dynamic and comprehensive experience when using their AP. Multiple operating mode also helps you easily to build wireless network for hard-to-wire locations or eliminating wireless dead zone.

One Button Setup Security

QSS Button -- One Button Setup Security (WPS Compatible)

Compatible with WI-FI Protected Setup (WPS), TL-WA701ND features Quick Security Setup that allows users to almost instantly setup their security simply by pressing the "QSS" button automatically establishing a WPA2 secure connection, which is more secure compared with WEP encryptions. Not only is this faster than normal security setups but more convenient in that you don’t need to remember a password.

WPA / WPA2 Encryptions -- Advanced Security

As for the security of WI-FI connection, WEP encryption is no longer the strongest and safest guard for outside threats. TL-WA701ND provides WPA/WPA2 encryptions (both personal and enterprises) that are created by the WI-FI Alliance industry group, promoting interpretabilities and security for WLAN.

PoE equipped
More Flexible Deployment

PoE Supported - More Flexible Deployment

The TL-WA701ND is able to be powered using an Ethernet cable to simultaneously send data and electricity to wherever your AP may be located even up to 100 feet away. This feature multiplies your options allowing you to place the AP in a position that is most convenient to get the best signal possible, such as on the wall or on the ceiling of your office.

I have an Asus O!Play HD2 media player connected to a TV in a room to which I couldn't easily run a Cat5 cable. The O!Play doesn't have WiFi support built-in, so in order to be able to stream movies from my NAS, I needed a way to convert the Cat5 cable port in the device to a wireless link.

My main wireless router is a BT Home Hub running software version 4.7.5.1.83 (Type B), and what I needed was a device which could act as a network client to the Home Hub and then connect to the O!Play using a standard Cat5 cable.

After a little research, I realised that the TL-WA701ND should be able to perform this function. It has several modes of wireless operation:

Access Point - acting as a simple wireless hub to connect together multiple wireless devices.
Multi-SSID - allowing the device to advertise multiple SSIDs and create up top 4 VLANs.
Client - (the option I chose) this effectively allows it to link the local Cat5 port with a remote wireless hub or router.
Repeater - the device (with WDS enabled) will repeat all packets with an associated root wireless hub or router. This effectively extends the range of your wireless network.
Universal Repeater - the device (with WDS disabled) will again repeat all packets and grow the size of the wireless network.
Bridge - allows the device to act as a bridge with up to 4 similar devices to connect different wired LANs wirelessly.

I was amazed as how configurable it is, and how clear the built in help files are. This is not in broken Google translated English either. It's extremely well worded. The menu system is a breeze to navigate, too.

If you need to build a relatively small but very flexible WiFi network, this device is a fantastic choice.

Configuration is simple - set the IP on your PC to 192.168.1.100, connect to the device using WiFi or the Cat5 cable supplied, and type 192.168.1.254 into your browser. Login with admin/admin and away you go.

It support DHCP, address reservation, WEP, WPA/WPA2, MAC filtering, SNMP info publishing, Ping diagnostics, traffic graphing, continuous Pinging, firmware updates, config backup & restore, and a system log.

And all this for less than 20 quid - unbelievable. Certainly one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. Highly recommended!

If you're interesting to know what settings I needed to use to get my media player connected to my BT Home Hub (this should work with any similar plug & play wired network device supporting DHCP), they're as follows (note that my BT Home Hub is on 192.168.1.254 / 255.255.255.0) and any settings not listed were left as default:

Nice features 1 Jan 2011

Very good device with nice and stable WiFi that easily covers whole building. In past I had to use two APs, but now one is enough. There is also nice surprise, which Amazon fails to mention: devices is Power-over-Ethernet and comes with power injector. That makes installation possible in nearly any place and there is no need for power socket to be near. All you need to connect is one network cable and then you put power supply and injector near the switch on other side of network cable.

Great Value 5 Dec 2010
I bought this AP to connect my Sony TV to the internet, to enable iplayer etc.
The number of potential options for this devise mean that configuration is not for the faint hearted! However once you have mastered the set up, performance is very good.
A few config tips:
I set the AP up as a repeater, which means not only does it allow me to connect to the ethernet port of the TV it also boosts the signal of my home network.
You have to set up a static IP address on your PC to configure the devise (read page 1 of the manual)!
On the device set up the LAN with a static IP address and make sure the gateway is the same IP address as your router.
You need to set a static IP address up on your router for the AP (i.e. the same as the above address).
The security settings of the wireless network on the AP need to be identical to those of your router.

Overal a great product especially when you consider that the Sony USB stick to perform the same task costs 3 times as much, without extending the range of my network.
