Product Description

Product Description

The TL-SG1008 8-Port Gigabit desktop/rack-mount switch provides an easy way to make the transition to Gigabit Ethernet. All 8 ports support auto MDI/MDIX so there's no need to worry about the cable type. Moreover, the innovative energy-efficient technology means that the TL-SG1008 is the eco-friendly solution for your business network. Featuring 8 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, the TL-SG1008 greatly expands your network capacity, enabling instant large file transfer. This new switch can greatly expand your network capacity with much less power. It automatically adjusts power consumption according to the link status and cable length to limit the carbon footprint of your network.

When a computer or network device is off, the corresponding port of a traditional switch will continue to consume considerable amounts of power. The TL-SG1008 can automatically detect the link status of each port and reduce the power consumption of ports that are idle. The TL-SG1008 also analyses the length of the connected cable and adjusts the power usage accordingly, rather than keeping the power consumption in a conventional solution.

The TL-SG1008 features non-blocking wire-speed architecture with a 96 Gbps switching capacity for maximum data throughput. An 8K MAC address table provides scalability for even the largest networks. It also supports 802.3x Flow Control for full-duplex mode, and back pressure flow control for half-duplex mode alleviates traffic congestion and ensures reliable data transmission.

The auto features of this gigabit switch make installation quick and hassle-free, no configuring is required. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminate the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. The compact size makes it ideal for desktops with limited space, while it is also rack mountable, convenient and safe. Dynamic LED lights provide real-time work status display and basic fault diagnosis.

I normally have reservations when a glowing review is posted within days of receiving a product, I suspect that often the user hasn't had chance to properly evaluate the product. Which is why I'm posting this now, ....after it's been through the mill!

I bought this on the 1st November 2010, as part of an upgrade of a 10/100 network to Gigabit (1000). After unpacking, I simply plugged it in, connected the LAN cables and that was it. No fuss, no noise, no problems. Note: Important to use at least Cat 5e cables to ensure full speed potential, I use a mix of Cat 5e and Cat 6 - The Cat(egory) rating is marked on the cable sheathing.

Speed throughput improvement was very noticeable, which is what I would have expected anyway. I particularly like the built in power supply, no adapter/transformer to add to the already over-stocked collection. Just needs a standard 'kettle' power lead, which comes with it, as well as extension plates if you want to mount it in a rack.

It's been working happily and reliably ever since, totally silent, doesn't get over hot either, (but then I do keep it in a well ventilated area, and I suggest you do as well). Mine has weathered countless power cuts, switching on and off in rapid succession. It just works!

Up to buying this TP-Link switch, I was always a Netgear man, and always bought the metal version, never plastic. This TP-Link 8 port switch is of course also metal and just feels good quality; but at half the price!. Needless to say, after this I'm trying to think of a reason why I would ever buy a Netgear switch again....?

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good 21 July 2011
I bought this device over a month ago, arrived well-packed.
It works as advertized: no set-up, just plug in the router and any other machine and it all just works.
Got transfer speeds between 2 computers of 50 Megabyte/second, though most likely limited by the internal bus speed of the other computer than by the switch.
It also doesnt get hot at all while using 5 of the 8 ports, we'll see how that goes in a small lan party :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Solidly built and economical 11 Mar 2011

Very pleased with this switch. It's very solidly made, with an IEC mains input connector, no wall wart. The brackets to rack-mount it are included in the box.

Power consumption is showing just 1 watt with a couple of devices plugged in at 100MB.

Extremely good value for money and will be put to good use when my new NAS arrives.

Works as expected. I have a limited depth in my cabinet and would have appreciated a mains lead with right angle IEC connector.

Sturdier metal case, built-in power supply (Kettle lead socket) and rack mounting kit make this worth the few extra pounds over the desktop version.
