Product Description

Style Name: 300Mbps Wireless N

Product Description

What This Product Does

Wireless N PCI Adapter TL-WN851ND allows you to connect a desktop computer to a wireless network and access high-speed Internet connection. Comply with IEEE 802.11n, they provide wireless speed up to 300 Mbps, which is beneficial for the online gaming or even HD video streaming.

Highlights:

Wireless N speed up to 300 Mbps makes it ideal for video streaming, online gaming and Internet calls

MIMO technology with stronger signal penetration strength, wider wireless coverage, providing better performance and stability

Easily setup a highly secured wireless link with QSS (Quick Security Setup)

Includes a low profile bracket

Wireless N - Speed & Range

MIMO (multiple input, multiple output antennas) technology, it shows more excellent abilities of mitigating data loss over long distances and through obstacles in a small office or a large apartment, even in a steel-and-concrete building. Above all, you could easily pick up the wireless network during long-distance connection where legacy 11 g products may not.

CCA Technology - Stable Wireless Signals

Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) automatically avoids channel conflicts using its clear channel selection feature and fully realises the advantages of channel binding, greatly enhanced the wireless performance.

WPA / WPA2 Encryptions - Advanced Security

As for the security of WI-FI connection, WEP encryption has been no longer the strongest and safest guards for outside intrusions. TL-WN851ND provides WPA/WPA2 encryptions that are created by the WI-FI Alliance industry group, promoting interpretabilities and security for WLAN, which could effectively and efficiently protect the wireless network.

Quick Security Setup

Compatible with WI-FI Protected Setup (WPS), TL-WN851ND features Quick Security Setup (QSS) function, which is ideal for creating a WPA encrypted connection to prevent outside intrusion, and meanwhile maximise the management resources. Not only is this faster than normal security setups but more convenient in that you don't need to remember a password.

Bundled CD for Easy Operation

TL-WN851ND comes with a CD with utility that helps you complete the software installation and wireless network settings, including security configurations and wireless connection, which is convenient for users, even for novice users.

I was having problems with another budget priced PCI card by Edimax - basically every so often I'd reboot my PC, and the card wouldn't be recognised. Eventually I tired of having to reboot repeatedly (as the problem became worse over time) just to get a working wireless connection (and, in case you're now wondering - indeed I tried reinstalling my Edimax multiple times too). It just never was reliable enough, so I bought this TP Link to replace it. The good news is it's brilliantly reliable. Hasn't given any operating trouble since I installed it nearly two months ago. However I cannot give it five stars for the following reason which other reviewers have strangely overlooked: Its supplied aerial is very very weak in its wireless reception. Using the default aerial I am getting a signal strength of an average of 38% when my router is only 4 meters away!! Yes, you read that right. That is, in other words, poor performance.

Because this was seriously affecting the speeds I was getting, and that I recalled that my (very similarly priced) Edimax PCI card's reception was so much stronger, I had the brainwave earlier today, to swap the aerial supplied with this TP Link card and screw in instead, the aerial which came with my former Edimax card. I suspected that this was an aerial and not a card issue. And I was right.

Not just right, the results were quite unbelievable - signal strength in exactly the same position of computer and router has jumped from 38% average to averages between 80 and 82%!

Style Name: 150Mbps Wireless N Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I ordered this card to allow me to move my sons desktop computer into his room where there is no wired connection. This seemed to be a very cost effective way to do it. It came in retail packaging along with a driver disk and a printed quick start guide. The Device drivers were easy to install and the device then was recognised first time into Windows 7.

The card supports the N standard and is also compatible with the older and slower wireless B and G standards but it should be noted that the N standard is only supported at 2.4GHz and not 5GHz. This may be an issue as some routers are given the choice to broadcast wireless N on 5GHz to reduce congestion. However the adapter peered with my BT Home Hub 3 which is a 2.4GHz device anyway and seems to work well so far. Good product and great value.

    My Setup:

An i5 desktop PC (ASUS P7P55D Pro 1156 motherboard) within an Antec Sonata II case running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. I have BT Infinity (HomeHub 3) as my ISP with a connection speed of approximately 60MB down and 40MB up. The desktop this card was installed into was located 1 floor below the HomeHub router, in a standard terraced brick wall house, with the desktop on the floor up against a wall. The Wireless on the HomeHub is set to a/b/g/ and Automatic channels. In the same room, near the same location to the desktop, I have an Xbox 360 Slim which has built in Wireless-N connection.

    Results with TL-WN851ND:

After initial installation using the supplied drivers on the mini-disc, I was getting about 0.8MB down and 5MB up according to Speedtest.net with 2 bars of signal according to the software utility. I upgraded to the latest drivers downloaded from the TP Link website (uninstalled previous etc), but found no improvement in speed or reception. I spent 10 minutes testing different wireless channels on the HomeHub and found Channel 4 to give me the best speed according to Speedtest of 10MB up/down. However, a day later and despite no changes to the channel, the speed was back down to less than 1MB down. I retested the 11 channels on the router and this time found that a different channel (Channel 1) was giving me the best results (close to 10MB again) so went with that. A day later and the same thing happened - connection speed drops significantly despite no changes to the channel. On top of this, having used this card for a week, I had several instances of hours worth of no connection to my HomeHub. During this time, my Xbox 360 connected perfectly with the HomeHub and downloaded large files fast.

    End result:

    I am returning this card.

I wanted to get a linux compatible device to connect to our router in our home network which is quite far away from my desk (10 meters, 2 walls and only a wireless g router).
I bought 5 usb devices from different stores and non of them could handle both linux and the distance the same time. At the end I bought this one from amazon.
It's working out of the box in ubuntu 11.4 haven't tried other distros but will update the review when I have time to try some.
I didn't have to install drivers even in Windows 7(64bit). but I can't say this for sure as that might be because some tools I used for the previous devices.
Anyway I removed my driver and installed the one on the cd and it is working well.
I get only 2-3 bars signal but it's a wireless g network really so
I can't except it to be much better but even with this signal strength I never had to reconnect in the last 3 days.
I don't know how good it could be on a wireless n network yet.
It's cheap and does a great job. I really like this product!
