Product Description

Product Description

TP-Link's 300Mbps Wireless N Range Extender

TP-Link's TL-WA830RE 300Mbps Wireless N Range Extender is designed to extend the coverage and improve the signal strength of an existing wireless network to eliminate 'dead zones'. Combined with wireless N technologies, superior security and wider compatibility, TL-WA830RE offers a secure high-speed solution that vastly improves the network coverage without changing the wireless network, giving you the freedom to enjoy uninterrupted internet anywhere in your home, hotel or small office.

Range Extender Mode -- Signal Booster

TP-Link TL-WA830RE is designed to select Range Extender mode as the default wireless setting, working as a signal booster to relay the wireless signal and increase the distance over which a WLAN signal can spread, overcoming obstacles and enhancing overall network signal quality. It can also work at the conventional AP mode, accessing the Internet via ADSL/Cable modem and linking the wireless and wired network together.

300Mbps Wireless N Speed -- Speed and Range

Adopting IEEE 802.11n advanced MIMO (Multi Input Multi Output) technology, TL-WA830RE simultaneously works through 2 antennas to Tx and Rx to overcome the interference and signal degradation when traveling long distances or through physical barriers in a small office or a large apartment, resulting in an improvement in the wireless performance, even in a steel-and-concrete building. Above all, you could easily pick up the wireless network during long-distance connection where legacy 11g products may not.

One Button for Connection

TL-WA830RE features a Range Extender button, which allows users to set-up the wireless connection with 1 press of the button.

I live in an old house with stone walls about 2 feet (60cm) thick. With the ADSL router located in an upstairs office the only reliable WiFi connection was in the room immediately below it.This TP Link Range Extender, located downstairs, has extended the range of my WiFi coverage all over the ground floor and even out into the conservatory where there was no detectable signal before.Setting up the device was very simple, taking just a few minutes to set up the connection to my TalkTalk supplied Huawei EchoLife HG532 ADSL Router.I am impatient and intolerant of technology that doesn't work first time, but by using the push button set up option and the WPS button on the TalkTalk router set up was completely painless. You do the initial set up with the Range Extender right next to your ADSL router, then move it to it's prefered working position. It took a few minutes to find the best spot, with a convenient mains socket nearby, that gave good coverage throughout the house. Once this spot was found the connection proved to be fast and reliable.
There is a very useful piece of software called inSIDDer, available as freeware, that I downloaded on to a laptop to use as an indicator of signal quality around the house. This program displays all the wireless networks receivable at your location and their relative signal quality. I would recommend using this during the search for the ideal spot to place the Range Extender, it takes all of the guess work out of it. It is also a good survey tool if you haven't decided whether you are going to buy a Range Extender yet. All in all a highly recommended product.

After a bit of fiddling around with the setup, I now have this TP-Link range extender working in my basement flat and have a strong WiFi signal in rooms where previously it was very patchy due to the number of brick walls blocking the signal from my broadband router.

If you have a secured WiFi network, then the quick setup is almost certain not to work. The setup guide suggests that you merely need to press and hold the "WPS" button on your router and the "Extender" button on the range extender, then they will talk to each other and set up the extender automatically. This does not work with an EE Brightbox router - you may be lucky, but don't give up if not. I also tried the Easy Setup Assistant utility that comes with the extender on a CD. Again, no luck.

I am not particularly technical but I persevered. I didn't have to resort to calling TP-Link's helpline, but from what I read, they're very helpful.

Here's what I did next (note that you must use a wired connection to the TP-Link extender to perform the setup):
Logged on to my broadband router using the details that came with it (the IP address, which I typed in to the address bar in my web browser, plus username and password)
Located the IP address range that the router uses when assigning an IP address to any device that connects to it (this was under the heading "DHCP") - I found that it uses 198.168.1.0 to 198.168.1.254
The TP-Link extender needs to have an IP address in the same range, but in its factory configuration, it has the static IP address 198.168.0.

I am mainly on a Homeplug network at home which is vastly superior to wireless. However when I got the New iPad 3rd generation, I had to use my wireless more. My daughter's Netbook has no problems all over the house, but the iPad's wireless reception is weak. I ordered a new wireless router and even exchanged the iPad and it was just the same and I was still getting dropouts at the back of the house and only 1 bar on the signal strength.
So I bought this. I plugged it in next to my router and pressed the wps button on the router until it flashed. Then I held down the button on the front of this unit until it flashed. Ten seconds later the light went solid meaning it connected. I then unplugged the extender and plugged it in at the back of the house where it can just get a signal.
Result is I now have 3 bars of signal strength virtually everywhere in the house. When using the iPad there is no need to connect to a different network, put in a new password etc- it just works, locking onto whichever is the strongest signal.
So in summary if you have an iPad and are frustrated by its weak wifi reception capability- just get one of these!

If you are reading about this product you are in a similar situation to me. I live in a 30s semi with the main telephone socket in the extension (thanks to an inspired decision by the builders) which gives us a dead wireless spot in a couple of rooms upstairs. Sometimes my iPad gets a bar, sometimes none.

This review if to get it BT Home Hub 3 working with a Mac, using the WA830RE as a range extender (ie not connected to the main router wirelessly). I have BT Infinity 2 with a download speed of about 75 MB/S. I am fairly technical in nature but IP addresses puzzle me a bit, so I am a wireless novice. I couldn't use Powerline units because of the way my electrical circuits are (I have used them in the past before getting the extension built).

I chose the WA830RE because a lot of people got it working and the price is pretty amazing. But of course there are also people who give up and send it back......

My top tip: have patience and put aside an hour. If you expect it to be done quickly you will get frustrated.

1. If you are using the extender with a Mac DO NOT USE THE DISC! It is a 3" mini CD and will get stuck. There are lots of horror stories with people paying to get their iMacs unjammed. Instead go to the TP-Link.com site and get the instructions (faq 362) or google "WA830RE with Mac".

2. If you are using this with BT Home Hub 3 DO NOT try the easy method of pressing the button on your router and the extender. You will pair it with BT-FON, find you get a great service, realise you need your password and will then give up! Even if you know the password you will then have an unsecured network.

3. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS in the FAQ.
