Product Description

Product Description

What This Product Does

The TD-W8961ND Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router is an All-in-One device that combines the functions of a high speed ADSL modem, a 4-Port 10/100Mbps NAT router and a wireless access point. It is designed to provide end-users with a one-stop solution to acquiring and sharing high-speed Internet access over a wired/wireless network. Supporting the latest ADSL standards, the TD-W8961ND brings with it much higher speed than dial-up connections. Complying with the IEEE 802.11n standard, users will get up to 15X the speed and 5X the range of conventional 11g products. With this product, users can now enjoy more kinds of heavy bandwidth consuming applications like wireless HD video streaming, not possible with 11g products, from anywhere in their entire homes or even in their backyards.

One-Stop Solution

As a 3-in-1 device, the TD-W8961ND combines the functions of a high speed DSL modem, a 4-Port 10/100Mbps NAT router and a wireless N access point. Using a telephone line the TD-W8961ND establishes a high-speed ADSL2+ Internet connection. Once set up, the device's wired/wireless functions can be used to share media between devices, browse the Internet, talk on an IP phone, or even stream HD video. Save time and money using one device instead of multiple devices that take longer to set up and occupy more cluttered space.

Access High-Speed Internet

Unlike dial-up Internet service, a DSL Internet connection is always on, so users need not dial up or wait to access the web. Supporting the latest ADSL standards, the TD-W8961ND provides higher performance (up to 24Mbps downstream) and longer reach from user's local Internet Service Provider (ISP). This device also supports TR-069, which automatically updates the device's firmware and other settings when they become available from the ISP.

Exceptional Wireless Performance

TD-W8961ND is a high-speed solution that complies with IEEE802.11n standards with wireless transmission speeds of up to 300Mbps. It adopts MIMO technology, has two detachable Omni directional antennas providing better wireless performance, transmission rates, stability and coverage. Users can get up to 15x the speed and 5x the range of conventional 11g products and share high-speed DSL Internet connections, photos, music, files, and even heavy bandwidth consuming applications like wireless HD video streaming, something not possible with 11g products, from anywhere in their entire homes or even in their backyards.

Ideal for Multimedia Application

Port VLAN binds specific LAN ports and PVCs for differential services like IPTV. The TD-W8961ND's built-in QoS engine provides various QoS policies that help prioritize Internet traffic to enable smooth IPTV streaming and lag-free online gaming. Thus users can experience the benefits of a smooth network connection without worrying about traffic congestion. Combined with IGMP multicast and IGMP snooping features the TD-W8961ND makes an ideal solution for multimedia applications.

Advanced Network Security And Flexible Management

The TD-W8961ND utilizes NAT and SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewalls which inspect the contents of incoming packets before they are allowed in, preventing potential attacks from across the Internet. For added convenience, it supports access control based on MAC addresses, IP addresses, domain names or applications such as MSN or Yahoo Messenger, so that parents and network administrators can establish restricted access policies for children or staff. Aside from web configuration, the TD-W8961ND also provides TR-069 and SNMP, which automatically update the device's firmware and other settings when they become available from users'ISP. All of these features help users to enhance their network's security and make network management more flexible.

WPS One Button Security

To setup their network's security encryption, users need simply to press the "WPS" button on their TD-W8961ND, then push the "WPS" button or enter the router's PIN Code in the wireless client, and it will automatically establish a WPA secure connection. Not only is this faster than normal security setups but more convenient in that users don't need to remember a password.

Easy To Use

Easy Setup Assistant with multi-language support is provided in the product CD. Users can select their native language when setting up their device and complete Internet connection setup, wireless network settings and security configurations without the use of a multilingual dictionary. This benefit allows even novice users to setup their products without sacrificing any key features. Users need simply insert the TD-W8961ND's bundled Auto-Run CD to have their networks set up quickly and hassle-free in minutes.

I bought one of these to install in my parents' house as the old wireless router had conked out. As soon as I had selected the ISP (PlusNet - useless shower) from a dropdown list and entered the username and password in the right place it got itself online immediately with no bother. I note the problems one reviewer had trying to get the mini-cd to work in their mac. I never bothered using the CD, except when I need to check some stuff in the manual - AFAIK nobody actually needs it.

Admittedly the packaging is misleading because there's a big sticker blocking the LAN ports with a label urging you to 'run the CD first'. I've installed these things often enough to know you don't need to run any CD at all, you just login to 192.168.1.1 (usually) with your browser. If you do run the CD, you often get the bloated monster that is Internet Explorer blundering its way onto your desktop demanding to be made your default browser and asking you all sort of dumb questions about your surfing preferences... sorry, bit of a rant there. Bottom line - ignore the sticker over the ports.

Secondly, I was amazed to find that the firmware needed updating. I needed to use a fixed-IP address on the network and although I went through all the router's rather obscure and acronym-riddled menus I could not find the routine for fixing an IP address to one MAC address anywhere. Either TP had called it something else or it simply didn't exist, but as soon as I had updated the firmware the option appeared on Page One of the setup. Clearly I am not the only user who got lost in the menus looking for the blasted thing. Amazing that they ever issued a model that did not have that vital function from firmware v1.0.

Purchased this Modem/Router to replace an old Siemens Speedstream Modem, because I had began to experience increasing problems losing my internet connection & my provider, Talk Talk, assured me that my tetephone line & system settings were fine! I had already changed all of my ADSL filters, but that did not make any difference, either, so I decided to replace the modem.
I contacted Ebuyer Technical Department & asked their advice for a replacement & they recommended a TP-Link TD 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Router & would have ordered from them, but for their ridiculous postage prices!
So ordered from Amazon & saved over £5.00 on the deal.
This arrived very quickly & was really very simple to set-up! I simply connected the new router as described, then ran the set-up disk & the unit set-up itself and its worked perfectly ever since! Never lost my internet connection since!
From losing it 10-12 times per day to continuous connection for almost a week, great news!!!

First time writing on Amazon...this product needed it. After being disappointed by the Netgear DGN series, I thought i'd go for the lesser known company. However, it has lived up to it's price tag twice over. It's range is good which is expected as it's Draft-N, boosted the ADSL connection by another 1meg at least and is very reliable for keeping a steady connection. I've used several different devices (iphone, ipod, xbox 360, laptop etc)at once and at different times and it hasn't wavered once.

I'm an amateur when it comes to routers but i've had several and this one definitely comes out on top. The setup is simple but the browser interface can be daunting to a novice user.

Summing up, want something that don't look good but will give you a satisfied feeling after you've purchased it? Buy the W8961ND. It will NOT LET YOU DOWN!

This has replaced a Linksys Wag54 which constantly dropped the line causing problems. I have now had this product 4 days and it dropped a line out once but very quickly restored the status quo. It was easy to set up and is proving reliable. When setting up, use the browser option as the CD setup lost the country/ISP data and then encountered an error 20 later on. This was the process given from their help desk in response to the error.

I bought this to replace a NetGear N300 that kept dropping the Internet signal - a common problem with NetGears as i needed a powerful good range router.

We have 3 laptops, 2 smartphones, a Wii and an ipod that all need to be connected.

The TP is easy to set up provided you have some idea about what you are doing, a complete novice may become a little bewildered by the different screens.

But once we were up and running, it was faster than the Netgear and also very stable. I have had the internet drop once and that was because of the line, not the router.

I needed a greater range and this router has a very strong a fast range quite some distance away (and through half of the house!). If you are a bit of a distance away, it does tend to struggle to connect to the router but otherwise, I can't fault it.

Aesthetically, it is a little too 'functional' in its appearance but we have semi hidden it away.

My only real niggle is that if you turn it off, sometimes it takes a couple of goes to re-connect to the internet but I believe that this is firmware related and is being fixed currently.

Only 4 stars because of its physical look and also its set up screens. Nothing wrong with them but they look more 'IT Services' than consumer - Don't let that put you off, it's a great bit of kit.
