After spending 12 months with an axe - a log splitting wedge and a lump hammer. the headaches and pains in my elbow were annoying me, and purchasing this log splitter has made EVERYTHING so easy. My husband brings home all sorts of tree parts - it is his job. We thought about an electric one, but the price difference was a bit steep for us. So if you are in the same boat you will not be disappointed. this tool is fab - I am a 45 year old woman and I am really pleased with the splitter, some of the logs we have split have been over 2ft in diameter and up to 18 inches in length. (which would have taken me hours trying to split it with the axe/wedge/lump hammer combo). It takes seconds with this! so if you are in any doubt - don't worry - the only manual part is pushing the levers (feels like the gym on the cross trainer- sort of - but easier) I hope this helps.

As a 75 year old I was faced with a huge pile of logs over a foot in dameter, which had been cut from some trees on our land. At my age, splitting the logs with an axe, would leave me helpless and in agony for a few days afterwards.
This log splitter is easy to use, and creates suitable fodder for our wood burners. I wish I had found one when I was teaching physics, as it is a perfect demonstration of the use of hydraulic pressure,to multiply a force, and beats any dry textbook diagrams. It is very robust and perfectly built for the job.
I am very pleased indeed.

This Splitter worked straight out of the box. took on large diameter logs with knots or branch stubs no issues, the two speed handles make it easy and also avoid overpowering the faster, but less powerful ram. arrived on time. Five star !!!!!

I have been splitting logs for years with wedges and sledgehammers but working on larger logs like 15-18" in diameter. If they have major knots or branch junctions they can be hellish, needing 6, 8 or more strikes with the hammer. After a few hours of that you are done in.

The hydraulic splitter is a great piece of kit, it effortlessly splits even knotted and large logs - a nice feature is the massive wedge built as part of the "frame" of the machine which widely splits the log. I use a "spacer log" to fit smaller logs in as the ram only extends 2/3s of the way down the machine. The two handles operate pistons of different diameters so one is more "geared" than the other ie move more piston with less force while the other exerts much more force on a smaller travel. Great for the last push before the crack!

We had a production line going with logs in one end - split in 2 then using the axe to quarter or smaller. You can quarter with the machine but I found it slow compared to relative ease of the axe.

Its a heavy beast - but has wheels so you can trundle it around - back breaker to put in & out of the car but you need the weight to make it stable when operating.

For the first split on 10-12"+ logs its really effective and well worth the £120.

Oh and it wwas delivered the next day!

It's as heavy, is this log-splitter, as other reviewers have said, but the two small wheels enable it to be pulled and pushed over the concrete floor of our garage without any difficulty.

The splitter's general robustness is undoubted; it looks and feels like a business-like machine. For all that, I was initially puzzled by how to create a sufficiently long reach for the piston that pushes the log over the blade in order to split it (if your log is a short one) The answer is simply to insert a space-filling log that pushes up against the log intended for splitting. The action of using the higher and lower pressure cylinders works well - so full marks for design. One to two very tough old logs (probably pear wood) turn out to be hard to split, but the vast majority (from a felled mature ash tree) yield to the pressure, often with a satisfying 'crang' sound as they cleft apart, and what you create are good shaped logs that burn well. Using the machine is good exercise too.

Only one problem so far- I found that if I undid the pressure-release wheel too then far hydraulic oil started bubbling out as the spring returned the piston to its starting point. All the same, the next time the action worked just as well as ever. I think that this was a good purchase - a solid machine that does the job intended efficiently, predictably and without fuss.

After much frustration with the springs flying off, I rang customer services who worked out that I was missing a part that is supposed to stop the ram end rotating and disengaging from the piston. However, even with the new part fitted, the ram still rotates sufficiently to allow the ram arms to catch the springs. Consequently, I spend half my time having to re-engage the springs. One pair is now useless and the same problem occurs with the new pair. When the springs stay engaged and the ram does not rotate it is fine, but it is so unreliable. I would not recommend this tool. I would opt for one where the travel and rotation of the ram is constrained more rigidly.

This log splitter is well worth the money paid but if you are expecting it to split any type of logs you will be disappointed. It does not like notches or points where branch shoots have been no matter how small they are. The bleed cap is very awkward to get back in when you remove it for bleeding.
It is however a good bit of kit and even with it's limitations I am pleased with it and could recommend it. It certainly beats the axe.
