Format: Paperback
I bought this as a quick reference guide for use during conference calls, when I need to quickly refresh my memory on some key points. Naturally being a pocket book the coverage does not have the depth and detail that the full TOGAF document has, however by following the same structure it is a well thought out complement. The pocket guide meets my elementary requirements.

What I dislike in the book is consistent blue theme throughout the book - many tables and diagrams lose impact because of this. It could also be argued that this monotomy of colour makes a subject not known for being sexy even less so.

I would recomemd this book though to both those after such a quick reference guide or to somemone after a very quick introduction to TOGAF.

concise.. efficient... very useful to begin to discover TOGAF, prepare the certification, read in the public transports and have in one's pocket. Deep understanding of the concepts will however require the official SPEC or the full book.

I've purchased full and pocket editions in my exam preparation efforts.
Reading pocket guide on a train and tube.
Full edition @ home.
The pocket guide should have had a hard cover to sustain backpack life.

Thias pocket guide seems to be a normal sized book photographically shrunk to fit a pocket. As such the font is tiny and in some of the diagrams unreadable even with my most powerful reading glasses. It is definitely a reference book and you will struggle to learn a lot about Togaf if you don't already know the basics, but as an aide-de-memoire its fine. The writing style is pretty dry and there are lots of bullet lists. The index/contents aren't as comprehensive as they might be but the organisation is such that you can find most things fairly quickly. If only they had made it an inch bigger all round maybe it would have been easier to read and it would still have fit in my pocket!.

If your goal is to pass the FOUNDATION EXAM get this book and the companion Study Guide 30 May 2011
By Robert R. Rowntree - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Why get it --->I ordered this book and the study guide TOGAF Version 9 Foundation Study Guideand it was MORE then enough to get me through the TOGAF exam in less then 2 weeks - I got 90% on the exam. Everything you need to know is in these two books. So the problem of passing the foundation exam is 100% bounded by less then $100 of books - something anyone could afford so the author has leveled the economic "playing field" for everyone. The exam cost is another issue.

Whats in it ---> The books are reasonably well structured in my view. What does this mean? Well, in my view the most rapid way to absorb knowledge is to view pictures/graphs/chart as the primary mechanism while being supported by textual detail. This is exactly what the author has done. The diagrams and tables are mostly lifted from the 780 page TOGAF official document (tomb) available for free at the Open Group site. Its a good reference but not necessary to torture yourself by going though it cover to cover.

How I used it ---> To be fair, I set aside about 70% of my work day to get this done. I also used weekend time as well. I first read through the pocket guide to quickly gain a 40,000 foot view of TOGAF. Then I pushed through the study guide to get the detail. Not the most delightful content to read but once understood it was a relief that I got it under my belt. Sorta like the experience of getting to navy seal, not so nice going through it but once your through, its real good. I then cycled back through the pocket book and then did the sample exam included in this study guide. Got 75% and the recommendation in the book was, if you got 70% on the sample exam, then go ahead and write the real exam. I then did one more cycle through the book and pocket guide then wrote another sample exam I found for free on the internet. At this point After this, I scheduled the exam for 2 days forward. I went through the pocket book and skimmed the study guide the day before test day. On test day I skimmed through the pocket guide once more in about 90 minutes. I wrote the 1 hour exam and got 90%.

Next steps, Part II exam, Certified --->Now that I have the basics I will study over the next 4-6 weeks for the Certified level using the TOGAF 9 Certified Study GuideTOGAF 9 Certified Study Guide
