Book Description

TOGAF is a framework - a detailed method and a set of supporting tools - for developing an enterprise architecture, developed by members of The Open Group Architecture Forum.

TOGAF Version 9.1 is a maintenance update to TOGAF 9, addressing comments raised since the introduction of TOGAF 9 in 2009. It retains the major features and structure of TOGAF 9, thereby preserving existing investment in TOGAF, and adds further detail and clarification to what is already proven. It may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop an enterprise architecture for use within that organization (subject to the Conditions of Use).

This Book is divided into seven parts:

Part I - Introduction

This part provides a high-level introduction to the key concepts of enterprise architecture and in particular the TOGAF approach. It contains the definitions of terms used throughout TOGAF and release notes detailing the changes between this version and the previous version of TOGAF.

Part II - Architecture Development Method

This is the core of TOGAF. It describes the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) a step-by-step approach to developing an enterprise architecture.

Part III - ADM Guidelines & Techniques

This part contains a collection of guidelines and techniques available for use in applying TOGAF and the TOGAF ADM.

Part IV - Architecture Content Framework

This part describes the TOGAF content framework, including a structured metamodel for architectural artifacts, the use of re-usable architecture building blocks, and an overview of typical architecture deliverables.

Part V - Enterprise Continuum & Tools

This part discusses appropriate taxonomies and tools to categorize and store the outputs of architecture activity within an enterprise.

Part VI - TOGAF Reference Models

This part provides a selection of architectural reference models, which includes the TOGAF Foundation Architecture, and the Integrated Information Infrastructure Reference Model (III-RM).

Product Description

From the Inside Flap

The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a framework - a detailed method and a set of supporting tools - for developing an enterprise architecture, developed by members of The Open Group Architecture Forum (www.opengroup.org/architecture). As a comprehensive, open method for enterprise architecture, TOGAF Version 9 complements, and can be used in conjunction with, other frameworks that are more focused on specific aspects of architecture or for vertical sectors such as Government, Defense, and Finance. TOGAF may be used freely by any organization wishing to develop an enterprise architecture for use within that organization (subject to the Conditions of Use). This book is divided into seven main parts : * PART I (Introduction) This part provides a high-level introduction to the key concepts of enterprise architecture and in particular the TOGAF approach. It contains the definitions of terms used throughout TOGAF and release notes detailing the changes between this version and the previous version of TOGAF. * PART II (Architecture Development Method) This is the core of TOGAF. I have been reading through this book over the past few months preparing for part 1 certification (self study) and found the guide to be very good. There are however places where less wording (or breaking out notes from the main text) and more examples would be appropiate, especially due to the formal writing style used.
This material is also freely available on the main TOGAF site, but obviously easier to read on paper/ebook reader.

The standard of documentation and presentation of diagrams etc is very high. It is also nice to have quite a lot of pictures to aid understanding :-)

I would recommend this book for anyone using TOGAF as either a guide or reference, however it is very large so do not expect a brisk read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality hard copy 17 Jun. 2009
Format:Paperback
A quality hard copy of the TOGAF method - easier to read than endless htm docs or huge pdfs! TOGAF has become the de facto standard for developing enterprise architectures and the latest version (v9) has been expanded to cover the particular needs of packaged systems such as SAP.

Although this publication provides a lot to assimilate, as a reference copy for architects involved in designing strategic business information systems, it is essential.

A good one-stop-shop guide and toolsets for getting your enterprise architecture right. A lot of thought, experience, and funding have gone into this, and the results are well worth the price you pay for the book (and the actual accreditation should you or your organisation wish to go down that route). On embarking on the journey to this structured approach, one needs to carefully determine which components to select and implement first. I would start with the governance. Like other detailed methodologies (quality, architecture, design, and project management) it takes a lot of strong leadership and targeted funding to implement, but then what is the price of getting your enterprise architecture wrong?"

A wealth of information for anyone looking for a foot-hold in Enterprise Architecture. A relatively consistent and comprehensive framework with an associated method for developing the architecture. It is your choice what you include or exclude from the framework and can be mapped to other process frameworks within the organsation. Can highly recommend it but beware that the topic is relatively dry and the authors have tried their best to make it interesting and readable. Mainly though it should be viewed as a reference manual.
